FastDL syncer (C# - Net Core) - Not a release

Last read Never

Doesn't really count as a script, as it's written in C#... But yeah. Didn't see any other category which would suit this tool.

Is anyone interested in a tool that can automatically sync from the local GMOD directory to an FTP server? The program in action

I only made this tool as the existing tool doesn't work very well (Quite slow, and it was outputting the files incorrectly).

It also generates the FastDL list, and will very soon create the workshop version (based on collection id). The workshop generator does work, but I need to migrate it.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with this in terms of money. But tell me what you think, would you want this tool or are there already enough of them out there?

I don't think you should monetize it - I mean, I get you spent time on it and all that jazz but you should leave free for the community! It's really useful for some servers, too.

Also, IDK if you can sell this on GmodStore

No. I don't believe that you can sell this here as it isn't a gmod script written in lua. But you should release this as it would be useful especially to me as I have a VPS that I host my servers on.

I should've made this in off topic... Eh I'm not sure. Prefer to get something out of it. Don't get me wrong, I've made open-source content (not for GMOD) before, and it's nice to do that. But other people's happiness can't get me a bottle of coke I'll have a think about it.

Privately sell it if u really want, but it won't get accepted as a script submission. There's nothing really wrong with selling your work, people just want free stuff so don't let them drag you down.

This

That being said though I'm not sure if you'll have too much luck with selling something like this. Do what makes you happy I guess.

Linux makes it easy to bzip2 all files individually at once. For Windows, I assume there's some .bat out there to do it also or a program.

I made a similar application, but for local use only (no FTP). It can be donloaded here:

Because they don't allow applications/exe's that could potentially cause harm or more

Basically, anyone can make an exe clean and have something really useful after its accepted they could update it with a botnet, viruses, etc they, of course, would be found out sooner or later but sometimes things like that are too hard to decompile and check over to make sure it safe

the same can be done with Lua, what's to stop a content creator from updating a script to have a backdoor ?

They'd be compromising money they obviously worked for, along with never being able to make MORE money from the platform.

backdooring can only give access to a gmod server or something of that sort but with an exe it can be a keylogger or worse and steal passwords PayPal info and credit card info

the content curators and admins

they don't check every update on every script, that'd be highly impractical

That is true it would take way too much time for admins to check every update, But exe's and other executables are still way too risky to have in the marketplace compared to Lua, because a backdoored addon can be removed and banned and only a few gmod servers will temporarily effected, but with exe's say 10 people download it and it has a registry editor and adds hidden programs to keylog etc it would have long-lasting effects that even after the item being removed it would still be working possibly without people knowing, or knowing how to remove it. but worst case scenario with lua/gmod addons is someone backdoors and bans a whole darkrp server of kids and takes over until the owner tracks down the back door and changes rcon passwords and such. where an executable could add registry, and still info and make stuff near impossible to remove if you're not great with computers.

You people have a bit of an overactive imagination.

ye G i get your point, while it's highly impractical i think it's much better (for safety purposes) to personally check every single update of every SOFTWARE sold while not allowing in-program updates, not talking about lua scripts etc

while this does look like a good idea if executed well it's just not worth the risk or the time consindering there's not rly much software to be released for a gmod server

then again there's a reason the upper management of this site doesnt allow software to be sold (yet) so they'd know about it better than the two of us

We had this question asked to us in a support email a few days ago. My stance is, and I'm sure I speak for the entire mod team that we won't allow C# or C++ software on our site. This is because of the impracticality of reviewing the code, since we need to have the source at all times and you may not want to keep that in the archive. We also don't have the expertise to review C#/C++ code as most of our moderators don't really work with it that often.

As Marcuz stated; reviewing scripts with just Lua and HTML/PHP is one thing, but having to monitor the source of C#/C++ would be a bigger pain. I'm not sure how many of the mods here actually know the languages but it would create issues, and we'd all have to know the language extensively in order to feel safe with reviewing a script such as one with C#/C++ in it, ensuring nothing "malicious" was placed, because failing to find anything out of the norm would come back on us, and probably not sit well with the customers who purchase it.

I've had to review one script on gms that was submitted with a module included for DRM, and I just flat out denied it, because there's just too much of a pain to get the source, review, and they can always update it later with something bad if they wanted, and we'd have to keep tabs on that.
