Improving my Lua knowledge

Last read Never

Hi everyone. I have just decided to get back into Lua. I have been reverse engineering various scripts and that has expanded my knowledge vastly from the short time I have been doing it. But I was wondering what anyone else recommended on how to expand my knowledge in Lua. Thanks :)

Yes, a year ago by yourself. But I recently appealed and was accepted back into the community.

A rotten limb should be cut and never stiched back.. I hope the person who made the decision to unban you won't regret it later.

But you could always get a prosthetic limb to put in place :)

You aren't guy with analogies, are you? - Regardless, I'm not gonna continue this topic.

The point is that people have the potential to change. It seems as if you have a lot of preconceived notions.

I agree that people deserve a second chance.

I would recommend trying to make a few addons (justs don't release them on SF lol) that push your limits if you feel you understand the basics of the Lua language and how it is used within Garry's Mod. Examples include visuals/menus (the surface and VGUI libraries), data storage (file and SQL libraries, if you're feeling adventurous try using a MySQL module), or networking (the net library). If you make something you think is unique and useful, maybe release it on the Workshop (or Facepunch or Garrysmod.org).

Try remaking addons you see on SF or somewhere else without looking at the source code (a bit easier to do with SF addons, as you'd have to spend money to view the source). Out of courtesy to the original authors, it's probably a good idea to not release these.

Really? Using a net library is 'feeling adventurous' in your opinion lol. Using net library should be a standard for everyone.

this is very difficult if you don't have any knowledge of programming at all

the most this will do is just stop motivating you to code

Like a lot of people there i learned Lua by reading code and making my own shit.

Having real lessons in any other programming language may help you to understand some things in Lua. It's not about being a senior C dev, but Lua is coded in C, and if you understand how C works, like null terminated strings, structs etc.. it may help you in Lua.

Learning a higher level programming language will not teach you anything.

uh, probably not. Lua is made with C but isn't C.
