Successful scripters, how did you get started?
Hello everyone!
A little background about myself before I get into detail; I am a 20 year Computer Science student who has been playing Garry's Mod for the last 8 years of my life.
Not until recently did I feel the motivation or competence to begin learning GLua. My question for all of the scripters who have success is how did you start off and when did you become competent yourself? My long-term goal is to be a part of a development team for a server as that is something I have always wanted to do.
I am curious to see the responses!
Choose a project, work towards it. You'll take longer than someone who is experienced, and may not be the best optimized, but once you complete it then you have better knowledge. Rinse and repeat.
Just don't try to sell your 'first script'.

Thank you for the advice! I am currently following a video tutorial series on developing a gamemode. I believe it is giving me a very comprehensive view on the whole development process and made me realize how exhaustive the whole process can be.
Made something people wanted, there was one other one like mine but it was $40+ bucks so everyone turned to mine instead.
lol bLogs v1 was utter shit
I just improved my skills and developed for servers until they got better and then I created bLogs Revamped (which may need a revamp again at some point)

How did you get started with developing for servers? What kind of experience did you have to develop for one? Thanks everyone for the replies so far!

funny story actually. I wasn't actually looking for work.
When I was browsing through servers using bLogs on ScriptEnforcer I found a guy who had a lot of servers running bLogs which was quite suspicious. I added him and he told me that he just changed IPs often. He then asked me to work for him and I did. I'd never accept something like that now because I'm too busy but it just happened. I improved a lot of my skills making stuff for that server and I revamped bLogs while I was there.
Unfortunately I can't give you any advice on how to get work and improve your skills using that work because of the spontaneous way I met him :P

Ah, I see! That is a pretty interesting way of meeting someone to develop with haha.
I wouldn't consider myself successful however I have started producing a lot my higher quality material recently compared to when I first I started. What I suggest is to understand your scope, make something you know you can, create a base, then build upon that base. Make little things, then make them bigger.
Make things unique, and by that I mean everything including from the design mainly and how it works.
Take mLogs for example, took billy's style and their wiki page is from a popular rust mod, that's why they're failing in sales.
by not selling an addon 30€ to someone

Where would you recommend taking inspiration from? Do you recommend building off other people's projects and modify them to get an idea on how they work and so forth? Again, thank you all for the replies!

Find what projects are in high demand.
Well, I'm not a 'succesful' developer yet, but I'm working my way up. I've always loooved the idea of programing computers dince I was a kid, however, everything started after the owner of my favorite TTT and DarkRP community told me he was gonna close the servers. I was very sad since it was the first gmod community I got into ever, it was very entertaining, and it helped me learn english as well by interacting with english-speaking players in a more personal way thanks to gmod's roleplaying experience, so I really liked it; when it closed, I tried to look for other serious rp servers to play on, but all of them had stupid shit like superhero jobs and 'funny' jobs and weapons, so I decided to make my own one. At first it was very easy for me to get into the server developing thing since I already had experience with gmod addons and commands, so creating the server was not difficult at, but it failed misserably because of my lack of experience with managing communities. After some months, a former admin of the community I played on contacted me and offered me a job as his developer; he would manage the community, and I would manage the server, and it went suprisingly well! I earned $100 in a month (the other guy kept like $400), and it was my first experince ever with getting money online (it was 2 years ago, I was 14 years old). After that, I began making other servers to make more money, buy I reached a point where I had no love for it anymore, so I decided to learn glua and make my own addons for other new server developers. I had never programed anything in my life, but I knew everything about basic computer logic, so I watched a couple of Code Blue's GLua videos and made my first script, Advanced Bail System. It sucked, but it gave me the idea of what people liked, and what they didn't. 1 year later, here I am! To make it short, the best tip I can give you is to get involved with a server before coding a script, that way you will learn what players want or like, and how they want it, and then, code something small. Don't try make it sell a lot, because it won't, but at least try your best to make it worth the price, even if that price is $1.
If you really want to become a successful developer, you have to start out by paying $30k+ for college, going to your first huge job interview and ensuring that they don't even ask for the degree that you are going to have to pay off. Then when the HR manager at the interview asks "what makes you right for this position, you must reply with "because I'm the only dumbass within a 200km radius that will pay that type of money for a piece of paper and never even use it". Then shake his hand, and walk out of the room like you're Jack Dawson from the movie "Titanic" and you just found out why Rose decided to keep her fat ass on the floating door that you'll later die by NOT being on. Three weeks later, they'll call you up, and say "congrats, you have the job. You were right, you're the only dumbass". Then a few years later, find a love affair for Garry's Mod because the community consists mainly of way younger people who have hair, and you'll soon start feeling as if you're the new partially bald pedophile on the block".
In all seriousness [too late], motivation, and wanting to do something. Believe it or not, I've had people send me messages saying "Thank you" because they are a server owner, and they suffer from depression, or some type of condition which makes it extremely hard for them to socialize. And by having a server that they can customize, it gives them something they can go on everyday, and interact with other people and open up more. Garry's Mod is a game, but to some people, it is more; it's a tool. And if you use a tool correctly, you can do some pretty cool damn things.
Adding to what I said before - motivation.
Take time and actually work on something. Motivation, and the drive to put actual effort into something instead of half assing can definitely mean the difference between a mediocre script, and a great one.

But in all seriousness, if you can make something for cheaper and better then by all means do it. Competition isn't bad. One of the funny things is, is when someone releases a script similar to another script that has already been released they get yelled at for not being original.

I mean it was always 20$ from the getcko then he changed it to 10 and to 5, he also never disabled it. No clue where you got 80 and 40$. And why can't Luna respond lol.
