What you should know before posting and applying for jobs.

So you want to apply or post a job in the jobs section. Cool! This is a thread of what you should know before applying or posting a job.

First and Foremost...

The job section is for POSTING JOBS. I've lost count on how many times I've seen someone post a job with "I can config your file for 50 dollars!".

again.

The job section is for POSTING JOBS.

Some general things I always see that need to be addressed.

  1. Never pay for "how many lines there are" for an addon
  2. Never say "Oh it's an easy addon to make" if you can't make it yourself. Nothing pisses me off more than hearing that.
  3. Usually, the addon is made, it's shown that it works, and payment it sent, then the addon it sent. (unless an arrangement is made by the creator or poster)
  4. PUT EVERYTHING YOU NEED IN THE JOB DESCRIPTION.

Now with that out of the way, here are some things you should do before having the addon made/ making the addon

Discussion

  1. (Both parties) Before beginning anything - Discuss a payment method IN TEXT. If they refuse, find someone else to work with. If they fuck you over, you're shit out of luck.
  2. (Both parties) Agree on a payment method. No I won't take nigerian money. (you may be thinking, isn't this common sense? Well yeah but you're on gmod and nobody has that here)
  3. (Job poster) Have everything you want in the addon IN TEXT. It is stupidly astonishing how many times someone goes "Yeah I want an addon with 2 features" and then once I finish they add another feature they want... and another... and another... for fuck sake please shut up and take the addon already.
  4. (Both parties) Check each other's reputation, gmodstore profile length, and steam account. If the person made their account yesterday, has no reputation, and doesn't own gmod, chances are you aren't going to get your addon or money.
  5. (Both parties) Discuss what needs to be done and what will happen if the person cannot fulfill your requirements. For example, if you ask for 5 features, and they can only do 4, don't go "oh i can only give you 5 dollars out of the 60 because this feature isn't in it." (Unless that 1 feature is 95% of the addon)
  6. (Job Poster) If you want a custom addon, expect to pay the big bucks. Don't expect vcmod 2 and then offer me 20 dollars because "vcmod is 20 dollars so it's a fair price". Addons that are custom are meant to be exclusive. Don't expect me to make an addon already on the workshop or gmodstore that does the exact same thing for the same price. and no, adding 5 more dollars doesn't help.
  7. (Addon maker) Discuss with the Job Poster while you make the addon. Give occasional updates, if you run into any roadblocks, etc.
  8. (Both parties) Accept on a bid after the addon is finished.

Congratulations, you passed the first phase of the jobs section. The addon is done and now you need to send the big old scary payment!

Payment

  1. If you agree on a price, there's no changing it unless it was agreed upon. Don't ask for less.
  2. If you didn't check already (which you should have), look at their reputation, gmodstore profile, etc. Don't expect the addon first if you have 3 karma or less and they have like 10 or more.
  3. If you ask for a job for 100 dollars, and it gets finished faster than you expected, don't fucking say "Oh I'm not paying you because you did it too fast." and then not pay them. (true story)
  4. This should have been discussed in the discussion section, but if it wasn't you need to send the money over through whatever of both of your choosings. Paypal, venmo, etc.
  5. (Both) Yes you need to legally pay taxes on your earnings.
  6. (Job poster) Unless a huge income is from your gmod server you can't write this off of your work taxes.

Congratulations! You smoothly purchased an addon or services. What now?

Post-Payment

Send the files however you prefer. Once you receive it, simply upload the files (I upload dummy files for gmodstore so you can rep) then click "XXX has paid me". That way, if you ever get disputed, you can say "hey, we both agreed on a price and this person says he received the files". If they didn't do that, then you can show them proof that you sent the files over and they had received it. I keep screenshots of everything.

Congratulations! You just finished, and/or posted a job. Now go become a big server man and make the big bucks!
