Script Protection Questions

Last read Never

Hi, I've got a few scripts I've been working on and planning to upload to scriptfodder, and I was wondering about what leak countermeasures are avaliable. I know about ScriptEnforcer, but how much does protecting a script actually help with sales?

I'm curious because I've seen quite a lot of people against DRM in Garry's Mod addons, yet just as many claim as if it is the best thing ever created.

  1. Does it affect sales by a marginal amount? I am talking about the difference from 50 sales, to 20 because it was leaked.
  2. What is the best way to use a DRM? Make a variable that creates an error if not found?
  3. How easy/difficult is it to create your own DRM? I plan to make it difficult to leak, it doesn't have to be impossible.

Thanks for your time.

I personally don't see much of a point to DRM. If you keep your script updated consistently, your customers happy, and handle things well PR side, it may not affect you.

Personally I found an increase in sales when it was leaked, as it not only gave me some advertisement, but those who used the leaks wanted to support me.

Everyone has their own thoughts though.

Personally, people that download leaks were most likely not going to pay for your script. I implemented a shaming scheme on SE recently when people are caught using leaked scripts, which has forced some of those users to purchase them. I have noticed an increase in my sales due to this.

Leaks will only really start hurting you when you no longer release updates for your script, then they have zero reason to purchase it.

There's no way DRM will not decrease your sales. The amount of times I've seen a French alt account buy my DRM protected scripts is insane.

DRM brings issues to your customers, if not implemented properly, it will fail to work if your server is down for example. It also stops customers accessing the source code to edit it.

There are two very simple solutions to this which the anti DRM fuckboys don't understand. #1: add backups, #2: give source code out to reputable customers with curfews (such as FTP access only given to the owner)

lots of customers also like to test scripts before they buy them. if you want to let them, make some shitty cheap server to let people test them

those who claim leaks increased their sales are bullshitting :v sure, it advertises your script but so does a taken down, DRM protected leak??

there is absolutely no gain to having your addons leaked and absolutely no loss (if implemented properly) to using DRM.

I don't know how people live with themselves knowing that there's cunts out there pirating your content and making money off it..

imo ScriptEnforcer needs some serious work done to the actual protection part of it. I've been impressed with the new features and shit recently but it's so easy to crack and is general knowledge.

I use my own DRM. My previous DRM was cracked by a Russian weeb, that's what made me make my current one, which hasn't had a crack released yet, even though the obfuscation is very simple. making your own DRM is a challenge and you will face a lot of lessons and issues at first.

my 2 cents

Out of curiosity, how do people add SE to their scripts? I've never looked at it nor have I tried to see how it's implemented. Just curious though, how does it get implemented into scripts; what makes it secure

ScriptEnforcer could do work to standardize people's use of the DRM.

Thanks for the detailed replies.

Just a last question, how should a DRM be made? An in-script http.post request to scriptfodder that returns true or false? Or downloading a key file, one that throws a predictable error when not found? Thanks

DRM is bad in my opinion and seriously reduces the chances of someone like me buying your script. However, to make things worse - ScriptEnforcer is a shitty easy to crack DRM. They ban people for things which are irrelevent and don't seem to even track it correctly.

Seriously avoid DRM if you can, but if you must have it, just avoid ScriptEnforcer.

I prefer no setup effort, no obfuscation, with offline backup DRM on most of my scripts. I don't want to talk about it too much publicly, but let's just say many people who leak scripts don't bother with any kind of edits (aka DRM removals) before leaking.
