Thoughts on forums and software

What are your preferences for forum software?

Personally mine is IPB because I really enjoy a more "community feel". I have messed with mybb and vanilla 2 once and awhile but I like the out of the box quality IPB has.

imo:

mybb is shit, especially if you don't know what you're doing, it can become very complex.

SMF is really easy and fun to use along with it's simplicity.

vBulletin is probably the best software out right now (but it's $400)

XenForo is pretty good if you can spare I think $200+

I've never had experience with other software than those.

I've worked with IPB before, it's one of the best looking and functioning forums software I've used. However, if you're looking for a quick and simple layout/setup, nothing beats SMF imo.

EDIT: Although I've found SMF's permission system to really shitty at times.

I personally like XenForo, it has a nice smooth feel to it, and the admin panel is easy to use. It looks like shit though.

I prefer custom made, because it gives full control when it comes to integration etc. But for an all out community suite, I'd probably go with IPBoard

I'd like to eventually figure out where to start making my own board from scratch but I'm personally not advanced enough

#7

I personally use MyBB as I know my way around it very well, if you don't know what you're doing with it though, it can give some ugly results.

#8

I use SMF because it's the best free forum software out there. Sure, it looks like garbage (high-end garbage if you find a decent theme for it) and it's got some quirks. But it is free, after all.

I always liked the look and feel of XenForo, but I don't have that kind of cash.

I think the ideal forum software would be, as Marcuz stated, custom made. However I'd have to learn a bunch more web dev before I get anywhere close to being able to implement that.

#9

I personally would build my own forum due to me having full control of features and integration however if this is not possible I would go with IPB or Xenforo.

#10

I wish we could've used a premade forum and integrated it here, but I don't know if the integration would've been easier than custom making.

Using MyBB would have been nice but there is definitely a potential for the forums to match the features of MyBB. There's not a wide selection of nice looking themes for MyBB either.

It most likely would've been a nightmare trying to integrate something like myBB or IPB, besides this is really snappy as it's not very resource intensive. If you want to give some users a way to customize their SF or the forum part of it. Add a custom CSS engine far down the road?

I have to disagree with this, there is a site I'm sure you're familiar with that has a pretty nice theme that's a fair amount of myBB.

"Death by MyBB" looks fantastic, yeah, but I'm not certain that the developers would use that theme judging by what its used on :v

No results show up on Google for it. But yeah, it looks great but I'm not sure that the amount of effort required to make a theme would actually be put in (I'm going to guess that it's quite a large and time consuming task)

You are correct it is a custom mybb theme but what you are referring to is diebb (cakes own custom version of mybb) basically it is a less resource intensive version of mybb, not to mention the custom modules it runs that is purely made by him. I actually have the theme recreated but have no idea on how they optimized their js so well.

Cake has mentioned uses of JavaScript libraries that control caching.

Also, after I posted that I Googled on Death by MyBB and it appears that some random Turkish website apparently uses it so I'm not 100% certain it's custom.

He rarely mentions it anymore ( am and old user and have talked to you once and awhile on there ;-)

But ironically someone "leaked" a(n) unofficial version of it (that's probably infested with backdoors

Basket.js was used to cache JavaScript into localStorage which may have been why it is so fast. However it was removed so I wouldn't really know.
