Estimating the right price for a job
Hello everyone ! 👋
Firstly, English is not my native language, I have done my best to avoid all spelling mistakes and make myself understood. If, however, you come across any spelling mistakes, I apologize in advance.
I took the liberty of posting this topic because I couldn’t find any relevant information : I am currently learning Glua, I have programmed a few little things here and there, but nothing very serious for the moment, I remain a beginner. At the same time, I am trying to create my own gamemode for Garry’s Mod, it’s something I’ve always wanted to try and I must say it’s as complicated as I had imagined at the start lol.
The idea remains clear: it’s essentially the stereotype of the RPG. Classes, statistics, grind: the classics of the genre.
Surprisingly, I managed to create a “persistent” class system (meaning, the choice of class is definitive), each with their own starting statistics, growth curve, equipment restrictions when applicable, all complemented with a custom damage formula ( which could really be greatly improved ) but the point is : I've done it
It works, but all of this can clearly be improved: the code is a mess, it rely on an ungodly amount of get / set PData, net.send and receive and so on, that's why I am thinking of posting a job here.
But I wouldn’t know how to estimate the fair value of a job like this, in this case either optimizing the code as it is, or rewriting the system from scratch. And possibly, creating a more convincing UI than my really basic client-side interface for the class choice.
So, if anyone can help estimate the value of this job, thank you. And thank you for reading me.
I don't know how, but in dark mode, most of your post is not readable btw.
This topic is rather difficult, gamemodes and maps are within the highest priced types of work here.
Since this is freelancing, "there's always someone who does it cheaper". In my fair estimation, a job like this, depending on the amount of code could go from $200 to $1000 easily.
You should reconsider if that's worth to you, there are a lot of "coders" here "specialized in optimization", where the results could be very questionable.
A reputable developer will cost you quite a lot, since you not only pay for their time, but also for the expertise they've build up a long the way.
If you say your code quality is questionable to begin with, a professional developer will mostly end up re-creating your gamemode from scratch I fear, but that's up to the dev to decide.
Thanks for letting me know about the dark mode thing, I never use it but yeah it was quite confusing to read my message for someone who does.
Indeed, i’ve take a look at the job section and jobs related to custom gamemodes tends to be more expensive, seems pretty logical though.
Thank you for answering !
