MySQL or HTTP Fetch?

If I have a table on a webserver somewhere and I want to access it, should I use MySQL and connect to it with limited permissions or try to use a Get Request and get the data somehow? MySQL is easy and I have it set up, but I'm worried about the security of it, like if the obfuscation was cracked the credentials to connect to my server would be leaked (credentials can only use SELECT). Even though they wouldn't be able to modify my database, I'd still rather not have them be able to leak customers' information. I feel like there is an easier solution but I can't seem to find one.

NOTE: At the moment I do not have a VPS but I likely will purchase one soon (I do have a web server hosting Remote MySQL).
