VPS hosting

I am looking to purchase A VPS to run my server on. I see there is another thread that was recently made on this, but I want more specific answers.

I run an 80 slot DarkRP server and we frequently fill our slots but have a slight lag issue due to our machine just not having enough beef to it. We are an east coast based server.

I have heard awful things about OVH but I have also heard decent things about them. I am unclear as to go with them.

I have heard of a company named "ExtraVM" and they seem cost effective. Any opinions are welcome as to what I should go with! I look forward to hearing your answers.

Don't host on a VPS for a fat drp server, you won't find a good provider who'll put you on high clocked single core CPU's for VPS's, also if you're maxing out 80 slots on drp chances are you'll get the odd attack so you'll want some good source protection, I'll link some stuff below for you: GMChosting / non-ref link - top range for Garry's Mod dedi's atm, not used their shared hosting but apparently their custom panel is really good Crident - GMC but a lot better for support in the EU if you need it

"I have heard awful things about OVH but I have also heard decent things about them. I am unclear as to go with them." ExtraVM is a reseller of ovh... Also ovh is probably the best for the price. Now for a 80 slot darkrp server I would look into a dedicated server.

There is a new hosting company, that I currently use. They have friendly support. And they should be able to host your 80 people server. They offer up to 100 people per gmod server and the good thing is, they have a 50% off promotional code right now do you could try their services for half of the usual price! Check them out... If you're going to buy a dedi, buy straight from OVH. The resellers claim all this bullshit about mitigating 3TBPS, but in reality OVH's protection alone is plenty for any attack. OVH already offers source protection included with their "game" servers and companies like GMC that are reselling them is just a huge rip off.

OVH is not a horrible company. Their game servers (I've tried the MC-32 package myself for a dedi) is actually pretty good. And their protection is great. My only complaint with them is the fact that their closest DC is in Canada, and in terms of the Gmod server browser, I had horrible results. Users were not connecting to my server as often, and when I switched and went with a company hosting a DC out of Los Angeles, the playerbase sky-rocketed back up.

I'm waiting for one of their United States DCs to launch, which could be sometime at the end of 2017-2018, and then I will probably go back to them. In terms of what they offer, it's not bad at all, and their dedi machines can handle whatever you throw at them; but my biggest issue at the moment with them is location.

I honestly get 50 ping from Texas, their pings aren't that big of a concern.

Honestly, it wasn't really the ping. Mine wasn't too bad either. It was just something with OVH, their location, and the garry's mod server-list. I don't exactly know why pop was so horrible, but we were barely getting randoms. Luna was also on my box, and he had issues as well. I moved to another host in LA and everything went back to being great again.

That's really weird. I run DarkRP with them an we get plenty of randoms it seems.

make america great again

Yeah it was weird. And I tried them out for almost 2 months. I really didn't want to give up the server for the deal I was getting, but the population was the most important thing, so unfortunately I have to wait until their U.S. datacenter launches.

You're just wrong in saying that. Having worked with GMC for I think a year now, I can confirm with confidence he totally does block attacks OVH don't block. When I last checked, A2S_GetChallenge was one, which is just a different vector of the old fashioned VSE attack. OVH doesn't block this, as you can't just cache the result or it'll open your server up to a different kind of vulnerability and should stop players from being able to join.

But OVH is good. I for one, don't shit talk OVH, though I can't talk for GMC here. One core reason a lot of people choose to go with hosts like Crident or GMC - knowing we're using OVH, and pay more is for the support they know OVH will not provide, and also the experience in handling issues often associated with running a gmod community at scale. You have to understand a lot of community owners look at their communities as a business - and for them, their servers are business critical infrastructure. They are happy to dish out £50 extra /mo for a brand they know can help them do what they're doing on a more intimate level.

OVH is really ideal for some people if you're running a smaller community or trying to save money, but ultimately they're an IaaS more than a consumer product - and anyone who has had issues with them will know this.

edit: this is why some people would rather pay for an actual game host
