Question (GmodStore)

Last read Never
#1

Are our scripts, reviews and rep gonna be transferred to Gmod Store? Cause if that's not the case, I might as well stop annoying clients for reviews :V

(Before anyone replies, I'm joking... Kind of... But still, it would be good to know :D)

It'd be goofy for nothing to carry over.

What's the point of upgrade? Selling more Garry's mod related* stuff or what?

*More addons besides scripts.

I personally might be dumb for saying this but they should be able to sell maps too idk if you can add protection for it but it would make servers a lot more unique for sure

I don't think you're dumb for saying this as iirc you can add protection to your maps. Like they cant all be decompiled or something idk, like maybe if you make a map, add some of your community to the map and iirc you can add certain code to maps and then run it against your servers code and that'd add some sense of security. I remember being told this and I may be 100% wrong though.

Anything can be decompiled with enough force and time, after it is then the map is out to anyone. Plus people already get the map by getting the BSP, it won't work just like how selling materials or models won't work.

It really isn't about having it decompiled, it's about people just downloading the BSP and sharing it on leak forums, it'll work instantly, no protection granted cause you can't really script inside maps, you can link Lua inside it but that's not gonna do any good w/o the actual script which people won't have nor will need cause the map will work.

Its not decompiling its i guess "leaking" idk how you would handle it also yes there is a lot of cracked decompilers that bypass that shit. Im just saing it would be a really cool idea if there was some sort of mapping service so that this website could expand on more than coding i guess even though thats the whole point of this it would just be cool

And i mean yes if there was a lua file in there like for example. rockford the door fix. Maybe a DRM there even though DRM's are bad in my opinion people wouldnt be able to get that from joining a server etc. Its just the leaking part would be the trouble

I remember being told about being able to force all entities to spawn at a certain position etc without correct validation, I could've swore another map done this... Maybe I'm totally wrong.

Any map can be decompiled, the issue is that have you ever smashed a vase on the ground and tried to stick all the pieces back together again? This is what happens when you decompile a map, it fucks it and only stupid kids would decompile a map to edit it. Yes there are silly entity type tricks to stop decompiling but they can all be bypassed.

TL;DR it's a waste of time trying to run a "private" map, you are never going to keep it private.

DRMs in gmod is a pretty funny joke, but a DRM in a map just won't work at all, maps are decompiled easily, and then bam your whole map is gone that you put up for sell, and the moderators can't tell whose actually buying it and leaking it cause there isn't any possible way to track it for every customer.

Can't really have anything more than scripts/coded dependant items because there is no way of securing them, etc etc..

Ah, thanks for clearing this up. I still find it cool how you can do entity tricks with the map etc. Is the reason why maps can be decompiled due to Source engine?

#19

You can DRM maps. Add lua execution in map. Have it ping a DRM server. DRM server returns response based on IP being whitelisted or not. Doubt anyone who can properly decompile will actually bother.
