Creating your project

Through all my computer science classes it has been pounded in my head to sit down, brainstorm, design, make pseudo code.. etc.
Just out of curiosity, who actually does this? Or do you just jump right into it?
Whenever I think of something fun to do I do it, unless it's a job ofc.
Never really thought of projects to make, usually I take a "thinking shit" and I come up with fun things to make. This helps me with designs for jobs as well sometimes.
