"I put my addons on a server but the owner took them/someone stole my addons!"
Bykanalumaddelaat 20th of August 2017 14:00:43
Did you even bother reading the post? You're pretty retarded to not understand this concept especially since the guy was asking about a situation that is exactly the fucking title of this thread.
Well to be fair this wasn't mentioned, he's talking it seems about the server provider. So let's say he goes to Crident (not trying to pick at you Drizzy, just the first one that comes to mind), and the owner of that company for whatever reason steals all his addons.
Now I very much doubt this situation will ever happen if you are going through reputable providers, and you can just search these forums for a list of them. I suppose it ultimately matters on the situation there and how it happened.
By that I mean let's say you buy a server from Momox, and he steals your addons - then yes we'll ban you because you didn't go through an actual company, and buying a server from another person is just asking for trouble. However if Josh at Nuclear Fallout Servers steals them, well, proof provided I'm certain we can resolve the issue.
The problem isn't about protection, who would give access to the main ftp anyway, it's like having 12345 as a password for your email.
My question was about jobs to fix or remake the scripts that are sold on this marketplace: say, the Server Owner want some minor tweaks of permaweapons (there are at least 3 scripts on gmodstore and they aren't clientside) but none of original creators of these scripts (=sellers) want to make them - they don't have time or they don't care, nevertheless in that case The Server Owner's usual route of actions would be to place offer in jobs section of gmodstore. Now, to work with the script (and change it according to SO's wishes) the scripter that accepts the job would need the files. If the Server Owner provide the files and the scripter SO hired would leak them, Server Owner is in trouble. If the scripter buys / recieves as a gift from SO their own copy of the script, and then SO leaks it, the scripter will be in trouble. Based on that logic, is it a statement that scripts bought on gmodstore can't be recoded according to buyer's wishes?

Not sure where you get that at all. I suppose in that certain situation what you need to do is think of it like this.
When you use GmodStore to hire a user to code something and all you're doing is providing them the script while not giving them full on server access - then we can look at it as you were too trusting, but as with providing proof we can obviously resolve the problem.
The issue is when it keeps happening, as then you are becoming a liability to the developers on this website, and potentially causing issues.
On a side note: you have to admire how quickly everyone jumped from "DRM is cancer" to "it's not my fault if my copy got leaked, you did not have protection"..

It's because now that people don't have the "well just block his copy!" excuse going, they realize they're actually having to take responsibility for their stuff.

This situation is getting more and more comical, to be honest. In the end, we get blamed for their mistakes. Mistakes which we have no way of knowing if it was an actual mistakes or an ill-intent (which is often the case).

You sir, have hit that point so well!
It's a very simple thing; so I don't see why some people are yelling "Well that's unfair! We have no way to control what happens to the scripts we've purchased", and you couldn't be anymore wrong.
It's been said time and time again:
- You NEVER EVER give a developer full access to your FTP.
- You NEVER EVER give a developer YOUR login information to your FTP, you create them their own account and ensure logging is enabled.
- You NEVER EVER give your "community developers" access to scripts you've purchased.
One thing, I'm going to be clear on. If you are going to start your own Garry's Mod server, and you will be the owner, you at VERY LEAST, should know how to install your own addons. If you don't want to take the time to learn how to even install addons that you purchase, then you have no business running a server.
As said before, if you're having a developer do a job for you; have them work on it in their own test environment. If they are a regular developer of Garry's Mod, they should already have one of these setup on their computer / rented server that they can just turn on in 10 seconds. And also, the entire time you work with a developer, you LOG EVERYTHING. Screenshot, screenshot, screenshot. Then if anything does happen, you can protect yourself. Even if I am having a casual conversation with another developer, right at the end, I screenshot it, every-time.
I ran the same community for 3+ years, and I never had any of the scripts I purchased, leaked. My staff had certain control designated to them based on what I trusted them with, and every single aspect of their actions were logged down to the second. I had security measures in place to ensure any little modification made to the server, was double and triple checked, which also included certain server actions being sent to my phone via text. And guess what, no issues.
As for being "framed", when we look at an appeal, we don't just read it and say "Welp, guilty". Personally, when I look at appeals, I go through every little piece of evidence available, and I match things up. If I sense that the person banned may be innocent, I go through and check even further, and I'll even go contact old people they've associated with to get all the stories and match them up. I've dealt with plenty of people that I've unbanned because I felt that they did nothing wrong, and were set up. There's a lot more to it than just saying "welp, it happened, you're done here". Hell, one guy said he had his stuff hacked, leaked by a rogue staff member, and I literally spent 8+ hours in a single day, talking to him, and investigating what happened, shuffling through screenshots, reading logs, and figuring out what pieces of the puzzle went where. So don't assume for a second that gmodstore staff are out to just ban.
So stop throwing out the bullshit of "It's impossible to protect the stuff I buy", no, it's not, and plenty of the more popular communities I've worked with, have done it for years, without any issues. As long as you take the necessary precautions, and you're not lazy, you'll be fine.

Hey guys! The whole "always blame the script owner" religion is really not a good thing. Let me explain why.I have seen so many server owners needing some work done, and I understand how sometimes relying on experienced developers is absolutely necessary.Alright, let's hire someone somewhere!Even if the owner is brilliant and only gives access to just a few folders (especially excluding the wholegarrysmod/addonsfolder), it's easy to grant read access to Lua files through some Lua script.Do you have a safe binary module replacement forfile.Open()that would prevent reading addons' Lua files and then sending them whereva? And even if it existed, it would mess up with some kinds of addons (.lua files not containing Lua [for Workshop] or Lua files analysis).Seriously, Garry's Mod is not made for paid content. No anti-theft features, no guarantee of genuine functions like in PHP, etc. I honestly wish that Garry's Mod is protected, but it's not.I'm sorry for hurting anyone in this message, but be sure that I do not intend this message to be used as anaddon theft tutorial.Momo ♥
Well, there's no true way to really stop thefts on anything, there is a way to technically prevent it for others at least. There's even a group dedicated to publicly blasting these people so that others are aware of these people. You shouldn't care if these groups do "nothing" or if other people think that these groups do "nothing" (even though that's entirely false), spreading the word alone about people who scam can help others in this situation. But yeah just wanted to clarify that there because what you said about no anti-theft features.

If you paid for a Server and it's a legit company, then you may sue them if they steal your files, however if a "friend" offered you his server and then steals all your files you might be a little bit more fucked and you can be banned I guess. But in the first case you will probably not be banned if you can explain and proof it was the hosting company
thanks man
Holy Admin batman you sure like to attack anyone who disagrees. Great treatment of customers!! Good for you

What? This isn't an overreach in the slightest. Your co-owners shouldn't be having access to your files. As the owner of such a "massive" community you should be controlling every aspect of your server. To add to this I've stated appeals are a thing, and if you've outed such a person from your community and shown you've resolved the problem across the board then you're good. It's the reason you create a separate FTP login for the user to access whatever server you give them access to, and you should be controlling what they have access to. Proof of logs and access restriction. What an absolutely ignorant thing to say. I have no words other than this is just dumb. You have no clue what you're talking about and it's obvious from this alone. Nobody can steal your addons from just joining, and this makes your post lose all credibility in regards to what you seem to actually know.

Don't post an opinion and expect everyone to sit quiet like. I call out people who I disagree with, and you should expect it when you post something controversial like that. If you can't handle it then don't post.
To add to this I didn't once call you anything more than ignorant, and didn't say much worse than your post being dumb, so I don't see how you think it's an attack. I broke down your post and offered counter arguments. If all you think is that it's an 'attack against customers' then you should probably reevaluate yourself.
So yes. Good for me, and shame on you.

I don't think you understand. He's a better victim than you.
I would like to thank Nookyava for allowing to me bypass useless, long, conversation with another one of my clients, again:

If someone take his own Script and rename my steam name into the license does it will ban me ? or you need more proof ?

There are other checks as well.
We do more than just check a matching steam name. We have several ways to check and see who has leaked a script. But it's top secret, if we tell you, we'd have to kill you.
