DRM an why I think it sucks.
Honestly I know I have said this so many times but why use DRM in Garry's Mod. It makes no sense and only punishes the user for using it. Preventing leaks is just silly, sure some people who had intent to use a leaked copy of your script who cannot find may go ahead and buy it but the amount of sales increased by this would probably only just cover the cost that it takes to use DRM anyway.
If I wanted to customise a script I purchased that uses DRM there is no way to do with without bypassing it and then making changes. Not only is this against the ScriptEnforcer rules but its just inconvenient. There is a place for DRM such as movies, games (not mods) and music but honestly, adding DRM to a script that someone paid for to add to a server that they are creating is horrible. Restricting creativity in ways that force anyone who wants to use your script to use it in the same way the other 100 darkrp server use it. Creativity blocking is not my only complaint with DRM but its one of the biggest.
Another issue is when ever ScriptEnforcer goes down owners are left to run there server with missing content EVEN THOUGH THEY PAID FOR THIS. And that's the point, if you pay for something you should get it, not just partial access to it but full access to do what you want with it, if that user leaks it then report them and get the download taken down. If anything leakers improve sales by more servers running it and thus more new server creator or current server owners will see the script and will want to purchase it (Not to encourage leaking as its still wrong).
At the end of the day of course its your decision to use DRM but at least 90% of the server owner you ask will say they hate DRM and don't like using scripts that have it. If you use DRM on your script then explain below if you really noticed a difference in sales by using it. To be honest I would rather loose 1-5 sales on a script and it be used by 200 server instead of gaining them and my script only existing on 10.
If you use DRM then post why, and if not post you reasons.
(And sure you can all rate me dumb but i'v said it before and i'll say it again, DRM is GMOD is just stupid.)
But with DRM you can ensure that content in the script comes from a verified source and not some fench town in the boonies by a guy weighing 200kg in his mothers basement looking to get illegitimate access to your darkrp servers...

How does this verify it? If you download it from scriptfodder then its clean. No need for DRM there, the only time you may get dodgy downloads is if you download a leaked version which is the users fault.

With DRM the french basement dwelling hons cannot get the full script to backdoor and leak and steal your hard work
Yeah drm is gay, not thay you protect your work too, also not every site is gonna takedown the download (baguette leak sites which you cant be bothered to take down when you can easily just disable the copy)

Scriptenforcer is so pathetic it's not even proper drm. Any person with a functioning brain can work out how to bypass it
Is that why you can't bypass it?
ByShigbeardat 11th of January 2017 10:19:03
Brain-loss is never a joke.
Do you honestly have no idea how simple script enforcer is? It just makes a get request and then just RunString's it? Im not gonna post the "Bypass" because i'll likely be banned but from that alone you should all have figured it out by now.
I bet the bypass wont even work
I use to hate DRMs, now I really don't care for them, if it doesn't bug me I won't bug it, although I absolutely hate how you have to link your server in order to get the addon working, aka going through a third party system instead of having it work instantly, plus the amount of tickets it generates is overwhelming.

Also anything is bypass-able with enough effort.

I have every idea how Script Enforcer works. It's not too different to ARitz's old ArcLoad, which I bypassed and dumped files from easily. However you fail to consider a few details.
- ScriptEnforcer may pass a string of obfusicated code that requests another set of obfusicated code
- ScriptEnforcer may verify that code has been executed as expected and that it hasn't been downloaded/saved. (ArcLoad was able to detect that I had dumped the string to a data file and auto-flag my IP Address, I'd imagine ScriptEnforcer could do the same thing)
- ScriptEnforcer may run code that permits ScriptEnforcer to scan your LUA or DATA directories for certain keywords like "backdoor" or "leak" or "dump" etc.
Ultimately what ScriptEnforcer has in its belt that protects its scripts is "the unknown", in the sense that we cannot truly know what is happening in the backend of ScriptEnforcer to verify your server's identity and that it should be receiving the code, and the act of sniffing the code received could set off its security measures.
To say that DRM is dumb and doesn't protect anything and that it's easy to bypass is wrong. When I bypassed Aritz's old ArcLoad years ago, it took him less than a minute to pop up in my server saying "You know why I'm here don't you...", however fortunately he and I had an understanding and that I only wanted to learn from his code (or rather, learn of a certain line in the code). If ScriptEnforcer is anything like ArcLoad in that regard, then I have no doubt that it does it's job, and I have no doubt you have no idea what you are talking about mr "Code Blue"

I really dislike the use of DRM because it limits me from editing a script that I have bought, though I understand that the creators want to protect their product and give them the full right to do that.

But what stops you asking the creators to add x thing to config so you could edit it?

Or hooks to extend/modify functionality that is protected by DRM? I did this for my gamemode, it takes around five seconds.
Personally, I'd prefer people to not mess with core functionality. (Example: DayZ Inventory system) I hate people opening tickets about an issue they've made for themselves that has caused me to waste an hour of my time debugging> Yeah, no thanks, i'd prefer it not be modified.
For me, DRM implies the following:
- It's essentially a backdoor, like it or not, if the DRM manager wants to, he has access to run code directly on your server.
- You're thus required to implicitly trust the people developing the DRM to keep it all secure, which Pheonix hasn't got a great track record with if you're using SE
- It's another point of failure you're adding to your server in three ways:
- The DRM provider is broken into
- The DRM provider (as in host) goes offline
- The mod author fucks up and breaks his addon which now updates live due to the nature of DRM (which isn't uncommon)
- It stops me from being able to:
- Fix issues in their script when I notice them, which is a lot faster than any developer will fix it
- Optimize things the script author refuses to acknowledge can be improved, or just writes off as a "micro optimisation", which I get. Like I understand not wanting to go through and change loads of small shit - which is why I like being able to do this myself.
- Add new features to scripts, meaning I need to now ask the mod author to add it, which will result in either:
- Them adding it, and thus becoming a bulkware for the other script users
- Them not adding it, thus the DRM becoming a cancer to myself
- It's so very easy to reverse engineer any DRM, even if it's using a module - you can, and will have it reverse engineered. The sad thing about this point is it makes all these downfalls really not worth it at the end of the day.
I could honestly go on... All of this combined typically forces me to remove the DRM from every script I use from scriptfodder - which as far as I'm aware is fully allowed and fine, however this isn't something I should need to do.
Edited Oh and people like Phoenix seem to ban people he just doesn't like from his DRM - effectively using it as a personal hate list. I was once banned, and then unbanned from it with absolutely no explanation, having leaked absolutely nothing before.

Version control™.

I don't think this has much point, features are features.

You did have an explanation, just look through my previous posts. You can see the banlist here.
You do make some valid points though.

Afaik, the only time ScriptFodder had all it's shit dumped was when you fucked up. I apologise if I'm incorrect though.
I don't think this has much point, features are features.
I strip every feature I don't use from an addon. Handling 100-120 players requires attention to detail. While I understand the general SF demographic couldn't care less as they struggle to hit 32, it pushes the more serious communities away from otherwise perfectly good content in some cases.

I can't seem to find myself there, but it would have been nice if you could have mentioned it when you first unbanned me...
