iOS or Android?
I am also in the market for a phone, does any one know any good trusted sites? I just feel like half of the iPhone's I look up are going to be faulty especially when some of them are cheap. Generally looking for a iPhone 6 or 7.

If you like aux, don't get the 7. One of the turn offs for me now, I don't carry my adapter with me as I leave it in my car for the aux.
Rooting an android device is easy, but it's not a 1-click process. By all newer phones I mean any phone that can get Android 7.x as an official upgrade.

I've just bought the Samsung Galaxy S8, they've basically stripped TouchWiz to nearly nothing and I will be rooting it either way.
They've also got Google Assistant on it as well as Bixby but the only negatives I found was the touch button and the bixby button but the touch button can be replaced by iris as well as the bixby button will soon be programmable to any application.

You bought it? Damn that was fast. Be sure to check out Dex dock for S8 in case you haven't seen it already. With that dock S8 is like Nintendo Switch phone version, lol.

I don't know if carriers still do this (Verizon/AT&T), but they tend to lock the bootloader to prevent you from being able to root/flash an OS (take the AT&T Galaxy S4 for ex).

How easy is it to root an android device? As I'd like to tweak mine as much as possible (within reason)
You're not going to get far with as much tweaking as someone running Android M. Probably the most popular app/repo for tweaking your phone was the Xposed framework which still isn't updated to support Android N. At most right now, I just have root for adblock and advanced reboot.

I'm happy with what stock features I saw, I spoke to both Samsung as well as a Carphone Warehouse rep and their manager, so I'm not too fussed if I can't tweak it so much.

Nah TouchWiz is shit along with any manufacturer that uses their own launcher. That's why I stick with flashing CyanogenMod (it's rebranded, but I can't remember the new name).
LineageOS
Umm, I would go with the new IOS 7 IPhone for the win bro

Not any large corporations though. BlackBerry still wins as the most secure phone.

this sums it up.
If you want something that just works while being as idiot proof as technology gets OR if you like the social status apple devices carry use apple, if you want to spend hours customising, tweaking and perfecting your user experience each time you get a new device, while not being ripped off don't use apple

blackberry's os is probably the second most attacked os from most governments, behind ios
You should have a look at the Oneplus 3T, pretty good phone for a lower price. Also I can really recommend Samsung since I have been using the Galaxy S7 Edge from the day that it got released and haven't had any problems with the phone which still is really smooth and fast. Another option would be the Google phones or Sony Xperia (though last one I tried was Z2 where the phones went downhill with newer models).
If you don't know what to choose I would take the following in consideration: Do you want a fast, up-to-date, good support for everything and you get all the freedom to do whatever you want to do with the phone then take an Android. If you want a reliable phone, mostly stable, full support and a lot of restrictions then take an iPhone.

The only lineup which guarantees the latest updates is google's phones. Any other manufacturer takes longer for updates/patches to roll out because of carriers wanting to add their own shit such as branding and bloatware. This has been slowly dwindling thanks to google being stricter on what can be modified to make android more uniform and secure by updates rolling out faster. Some carriers that have bloatware can be completely uninstalled instead of being disabled, but carriers still like to do things like locking the bootloader to prevent flashing the OS.
The good thing now is that carriers such as verizon have both CDMA & GSM in their phones meaning you can use their phones with carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile (requires you to request unlocking though).
To get the most out of your phone, you'd have to root. A decent amount of customization/tools require root. Support-wise can vary in reality since a lot of phones do have different layouts for finding setting and how some system apps made by the manufacturer are.

That probably is true, but it's still used by government. The only reason blackberry doesn't stand out is because their focus is security and the market share is primarily Android/iOS since they became popular and more liked by consumers.
