I think you're the one who needs to explain yourself here for that quality image!

Tried fixing the image.

Note to self: Don't make posts from the back of a car.

Time to adapt i guess? ๐Ÿ˜•

Yeah. Still a weird choice of shutting down the face punch forums. I can't find anything that actually explains the decision.

#7

Garry had been planning it for months, we just didn't know when to expect it

#8

Really?

I never knew. Did he actually post something on the forums?

If so I have no idea how I missed it...

I think I've heard that there is a archive in progress so fingers crossed!

#12

I think the main hit here is all the Lua knowledge that is now suddenly harder to access. Even today I found myself googling an issue, being lead to a facepunch thread and then being round house kicked straight to my weak nerd temple by Garry's goodbye message. The web.archive.org page is gonna be useful tho, just inconvenient to access every time...

what if garry is just trying to kill garrysmod???

I just have a feeling that the knockout forum won't be enough. The facepunch forum kept everything fairly organized while this one has everything in the same place. The archive definitely is a life saver for right now but that seems like a temporary solution. It might be a good idea to prop up a new forum just for development help.

I'm considering starting up an IPB forum, and then letting the community moderate it. Just a thought though.

I imagine it'd be hard to create a community forum like facepunch without already having a substantial userbase. You'd have to be in a position like gmodstore for example, where there's already a strong community around to use it, even better that everyone here has an interest in Lua.

Come on gmodstore, time to step up ;)

The only thing I can see that we could possibly do is:

  1. Make the forum public to view, for guests as well
  2. Add a Garry's Mod specific forum category with subforums like what Facepunch typically had
  3. Add a search bar
  4. Improve viewing of threads/replies a user has made
  5. Better list of new threads

We don't want to allocate time to developing a separate forum software completely separate from GmodStore as that would take some time to do. Hosting it with already existing software also sounds unappealing.

I'm not sure what else we could reasonably do beyond those 5 points.

I was thinking of making a new community forum specifically for Garry's Mod and Lua Support but i'm not sure if anyone would be interested or if it would be worth hosting.

If a subdomain was set up (e.g www.forums.gmodstore.com) then we could just set up IPS on that.

I have IPS on my computer so I'd be happy to do it haha.

Plus wouldn't mind helping out :)

IPS is a great base and you can customise the absolute shit out of it.

I talked to some other developers and decided that I'm going to try something akin to what I explained above, the rest I will explain later. I'm going use IPB because it's sturdy and doesn't require any hard maintenance. My intention is to then reach out to community members/leaders and let them moderate the site. I don't predict anything coming out of this but I wanted to at least try to help (IE if it works out it works out).

Edit: If you are interested in helping me out with this let me know. I want this to be a collaborative effort.

I have a domain already (gmodders.com) and am currently configuring everything.

For those interested, GmodStore recently added a new category in the forums for Garry's Mod.
