Notice to ALL Server Owners

#21

What if users here on GmodStore who want to purchase scripts were forced to register at least one server where they will use said scripts? A public list could be generated using that info, where community members can report either: A) Registered servers using addons which they do not own, or B) Unregistered servers using addons they do not own. The list would have to be sorted by server, in case multiple people have bought and installed addons on the same server (For example, if the server has multiple owners). And, in order to prevent people from registering servers they don't have access to/don't own, you could do something similar to what Script Enforcer did, where you would change your server's title for something specific in order to pair it with your account.

After that a ban can be issued to the owner of the server in case it is registered, or it could also give way to DMCA claims from the dev(s) of the addon.

That'd be dumb, people don't want to go through the process of adding their servers just to use addons they already bought. Plus gmodstore isn't making a fucking drm it's just an auto-updater that has protection against retards who can't understand it to leak it.

But this isn't script enforcer and I don't know how absent you've been but everyone hated script enforcer. (only reason why it was used is cause it was the only public drm)

You can literally already get servers taken down (if the host listens) by making a DMCA that doesn't require a server list, or just talking to them.

It's not a DRM, as you are not preventing scripts from being copied, but instead punishing those who copy them. What people hated about Script Enforcer was the fact that you couldn't use scripts that had the DRM if for any reason either your connection to Script Enforcer failed, or if you were using a local server.

This doesn't need to modify the add-on in any way either. All it would do is prevent people from tampering with the files and removing any sort of identification string you've put into them.

And not only that, as a developer you can't check every single server out there to see if they are running a leak of your script or not, but having the support from the rest of the community sure as hell helps.

DRM is annoying but this isn't DRM. Its a validation system for owners who are doing the right thing. (What hercs talking about)

A system to allow anyone to query an ip of a server and for it to print out all the scripts the server has registered and who its registered to. If players suspect that a server isn't buying genuine scripts, they can check. This system would allow the naming, shaming and banning of the owners who use pirated scripts. Buy the scripts otherwise face being ousted out publically.

Only thing that purchasers need to do is list the ip addresses of the servers they own. If people are pirating scripts, allow the community to report the offenders.

People hated being forced to put their server on his site. The main reason why they hated it is irrelevant to gmodstore but he could pull the plug on any server and the scripts that had SE installed stopped working for them just cause he was being a tyrant asshole. But that won't happen on gmodstore, but people still don't want to link their server.

There already is intensive data more than file strings, that's how the leak finder works even without the string replacements. If a huge server list became a thing, it'd be chaotic because there are over 63k users registered with about 6k active, about a third of those are developers, the rest roamers and server owners. If there are more than 1k server owners there's no doubt that's gonna double in server lists.

Plus to factor in you'll need people to report servers with actual evidence, which has already been proven easier said than done, just look at the report section, so what's stopping people from flooding the reports with useless shit like "ohohohoho this guy is leaking, this guy stole my loli pop, this guy stole my loli oc". Seems like useless data from what's already reported in the report section. Finally factor in the communities' wants, I don't think much people want to have their server listed on gmodstore just cause they're using a script, you don't see themeforest listing every website that uses their themes.

I rambled on and off so if I missed anything tell me.

And what heavy bob is saying is just pure idiotic, you're breaching peoples' privacy by seeing all the scripts they own, we had a conversation about this in the content-creator chat in discord and it's obvious no one wants everyone to see what scripts they own, just the content creator and their additional creators/support agents should see the scripts they made.

If opting in was an option, I'd show my purchase history publically because it shows the total dollars of appreciation I have to script authors.

That's why some devs use the half completed gmodstore API to check if a user has purchased it.

you can only see your own scripts, hence the api key restrictions on purchases

Okay? That's an unpopular opinion, already dozens of users refute against having their scripts displayed, script authors are grateful you buy their content, but they really don't care if you buy other people's scripts.

I guess some owners might not want to because of the perceived threat that competition might buy the same scripts.

As a form of validation I think it would be of the interest of players to know that server owners do spend donations to purchase content instead of pirating it.

If they didn't want competition to have these scripts, they'd hire a dev for themselves. (Referring to owners as server owners.)

I run my own server on a Dedicated Host. I suggest to all of those that run a Garry's Mod Server is to have 1 person have access to the FTP or Panel of your Server. I have 2 people but the other guy is a really close friend who i have known for over 4yrs. I did however have a Developer try & get into my FTP but my panel alert system alerted me of the problem & the Developer was removed ASAP. So in the long term its best not give out FTP access unless you truly trust the person. Don't give it out unless you can get a lot of info about them in the case they try to leak files in FTP you can easily report him.
