or you could just get a VPS and stop paying out the ass for shit serversyou have to know what you're doing, but I think it's worth the price reduction.

VPS = no. They're quite bad as said above. You also have to deal with all the security and shit like that, I'd rather pay a company to do it tbf, then you don't have to worry about it.

The CPU frequency of VPSes are often too low to host a Garry's mod server without lag. I tried this with a 3.1 ghz VPS and lagged at about 12 players.

As with all things, you get what you pay for, and you're going to need to shop around a bit to find out what works for you. I've run a server with 20+ players on without any noticeable lag on a $5/month VPS from Vultr. Compared to NFO' $18/month for a 20 slot server, this is a steal. Sure, NFO might have better hardware or bandwidth, but I don't think that makes up for the $13 price increase (unless you really need that extra performance, which most Garry's Mod servers don't).

See my above response for VPS's being "quite bad". As for security, what specifically are you talking about? For DDoSing, as discussed above no server hosts supply good protection without shelling out some big bucks. If DDoSing is something that affects your server, obviously you're going to need more than a simple server host or VPS.

If you want to pay a company to handle the technical aspects, go ahead. I'm just saying that for the amount you're paying, I definitely think it's worth it to spend some time learning how to do it yourself. If I can save $13/month just by learning how to install and run a Garry's Mod server from scratch, I'm going to do it. The Garry's Mod Wiki even has a page about it.

Not on about ddos protection but that's expected to be near to little. I'm talking about security exploits, memory leaks and unoptimised set ups etc. A lot you have to think about when you set up a VPS if you don't know what you're really doing.

If you want a middle ground of a VPS/Managed hosting - check our VGS out. Obviously I'm bias as I work on Crident. While you definitely don't get the same level of control - you are able to control which resources your server has - and which servers use which of your resources. We use Voxility for upstream protection which maxes out at about 600gbps. Not like that means shit - we get more layer 7 attacks than layer 4 as of recent, so volumetric capacity is just a fancy number.

The lag probably isn't relative to hardware or overloading - at only 5 players you really shouldn't have any issues with Serenity, so you'll most likely have a silly setting in your server.cfg or command line. Could you post either here? If you do - make sure to remove any sensitive data like the rcon password.

Do you know what you're talking about? I'm legitimately curious, because as far as I know you just need to get steamcmd and install Garry's Mod Dedicated Server. I've never heard of memory leaks or "unoptimized setups". Again, you need to know what you're doing, but there are plenty of tutorials online and it's not that hard. From what I've seen of server hosts, most of them have no clue what they're doing either. If you're willing to shell out the money to have a (possibly) better setup, go ahead.

sadly this is the truth.

Really - this guy clearly needs a highly managed solution though, and you're all telling him to do more himself. He needs his hand holding, and he needs someone to install dbugr for him, and tell him what is causing the issue. This is why you pay a bit extra for GSP's - they're supposed to provide this kind of support to new people. What went wrong was everyone started undercutting each other and now noone is getting enough money to make it worth their time.

I'm not just talking about Garry's Mod servers. Communities don't just run a gmod server, they have web hosting services as well as if you were to run the gamemode Bunny Hop by Gravious, he has external software which needs certain dependencies.

I am most probably looking into it a bit too much for what it needs but yes, you can follow tutorials but I have never done so myself.

Its seems quite the contrary.

Web hosting provided by server hosts is almost always terrible. If you want a website, get hosting from an actual website host.

I use NFO as my web host, only down side is, I can't install anything like Larva, Ruby, Sass, etc.. but I get the most updated common utilities along with 1 downside which is 50 connect limit. But I don't except hundreds of people to be on my site at once.

How much do you pay for NFO hosting? I wonder if their prices for web hosting are as inflated as their prices for game server hosting.

It's like $2 for unlimited everything apart from continuous connections.

$0.72 cents cause they gave me a coupon for using their services for 3 years or something.

Their game hosting is cheap too, even cheaper with my account (15% off)

First off, I only read a few comments before making my reply.

To me it sounds like it could only be a few variables here:

  1. Your host is not that great. (Suggested Host <-- trying to be helpful)
  2. Your addons are either conflicting or are too heavy. (2048 Lua File Limit)
  3. The map may be poorly optimized.

TO DO: Try changing the map to gm_construct. Try removing all addons (create a new file within your addons folder named "_OLDFILES" and transfer every addon in that. So you do not have to actually DELETE them) If neither of the above work, try switching hosts.

If none of the above work, private message me and I can provide more ideas.

UPDATE - I have fully reinstalled the server on the same hosting i still use, and obviously i removed few addons ( Meth cooking addon, PD Armory, etc.. ) And for now it appress to be less laggy, and actually playable.

Map is the best known rp map - _rp_downtown_v4c_v2 _ (** I would want to change the map soo badly, but there is something odd with the DRP community, they get afriad when they see any other map besides downtown.** )

Ill keep everyone in touch whats going on next, for now, it seems fine.

Also, i tend to get this error a lot in console.

  1. DLL_MessageEnd: Refusing to send user message TextMsg of 256 bytes to client, user message size limit is 255 bytes *

How can i fix that?

You need to set the max file size to higher. I forget the value, just google it (the value goes in server.cfg).

The map would only give you FPS problems I think and/or maybe entities(?). I haven't a clue what other impacts a map has to the server side if it does that is but I would recommend getting an optimized version or someone to optimize it for you.
