Need feedback about UI

Last read Never

Hi,

I do need feedback about the UI posted below. I got a script denied multiple times because my UI didn't look good. The previous times I added extra things trying to make it better, but it is supposedly still not good enough and I'm out of ideas. I would like to know what you do think about said UI and what could be improved. I tried looking at others scripts but to me their UI doesn't even look a lot better better (There is some that I think look even worse) I think it is a little subjective what you like however, so people point of views so I can improve it are welcome.

UI looks alright to me. Who ever is denying it must have some other reason they are not saying. Could try adding some blur to the panel possibly.

To be honest, it looks just very thrown together. The colors don't look appealing, and it reminds me of 'High Contrast Mode' in windows 98.

Try taking a look at Threebow's TDLib: https://www.gitbook.com/book/threebow/tdlib/details -- he's put a lot of useful features into the library and it's extremely easy to use, also has documentation, and there's some pre-made stuff in there like buttons, etc.

Just takes practice, once you've done enough UI, you'll get the hang of it and have a sense of what people enjoy. Browse the marketplace and see what other's have made (more recent stuff). There's a lot of good UIs that people have done and it may give you a direction to go in. (Just don't copy stuff exactly, make your own).

Also, the moderator who denied your script denied it because it was 'too simple / 5 second script', so the UI wasn't the primary denial reason. I haven't looked at it, but it sounds like functionality is a huge reason.

Note 2 I just opened the script, and the first thing I notice right off the bat, is every config item is a separate global, and not in a table.

IE

-- Command the players can use to open the change name window
ACRPN_CHANGE_NAME_COMMAND = "!changename"

-- Is the chat command above enabled ? Values : true or false
ACRPN_CHANGE_NAME_COMMAND_ENABLED = true

When you should be trying to use:

acrpn.name_command_enabled = true
acrpn.name_command = '!changename'

Something along those lines.

You did not look at the correct one Richard. The one you looked is useless but I don't know how to delete it. When I added more feature I submitted as the current one with different name etc. About the UI I have seen people speaking of TDLib so I may take a look, but asking people to download external content doesn't realy sound great and it will not fix problems of "Bad colors" or "Bad fonts" but if they are bad then what is considered good ? :\

EDIT : Is it actually allowed to include TDLib inside the addon folder ?

Let me take this apart for you.

  1. What the hell are those colors? Black on red is terrible.
  2. Ditch Trebuchet18 and Trebuchet24. Learn what surface.CreateFont does.
  3. Why the hell is there a space here?
  4. You don't sanitize this date input.
  5. Look up title capitalization conventions, this looks horrible.

This entire menu is just as low effort as it gets. Take a look at the attention to detail in Eris (my F4 menu), these tiny little insignificant buttons right here took me a bit more than an hour and a half to make because that's how you tell someone cares about their work vs. is trying to make a quick buck. Maybe that's how it got over a hundred sales in the first month and a half, we'll never know:

Seriously, it's the little things:

TDLib

TDLib is meant to be 100% agnostic towards your design choices. In other words, if you are absolute dogshit at making intuitive and captivating user interfaces, TDLib will not make your shit less shit. TDLib is only as good as you make it. It's a collection of methods to speed up commonly done functions in Derma. That's literally all it is.

For example, making this here anim would take ages, but it only took me about five minutes and six lines of code with TDLib.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL DO THE SAME.

Is it actually allowed to include TDLib inside the addon folder ?

Use your brain if you have one. If a moderator himself suggested it, I'm 100% sure you're allowed to. He's using it himself, ya dingus.

http://blog.usabilla.com/how-to-design-for-color-blindness/ - Read this.

From the conclusion

  1. Don’t only rely on color to convey a message
  2. Keep your color palette limited to 2 or 3 colors
  3. Use texture and patterns to show contrast
  4. Carefully select any contrasting colors and shades
  5. Avoid using bad color combinations

Do it again and this time use some texture. It looks like it was made using MS Paint. Having different colors in the UI so collected together is making me loose it. GURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

I count 6 colors, STAP USING SO MANY!

It's not just about the UI, overall, your code is garbage.

When OP was asked "How to detect a F3 press" on a french forum he showed code using the net lib, the "F3 press" was being detected by the server and then was sending a net message to the same client.

Stop trying to go pro if you can't even produce correct efficient code.

Sounds like OP needs to read http://wiki.garrysmod.com first prior to making a revision of this. That thing is the damn gmod bible.

Lol this is how i do it as well. This is actually how a lot of ppl do it https://maurits.tv/data/garrysmod/wiki/wiki.garrysmod.com/indexc026.html https://github.com/adamdburton/pointshop/blob/master/lua/pointshop/sv_init.lua#L146

This doesn't make any sense ??????????????????

Client send key press data to server and then the server send back the confirmation to the client ???????????

Just use gm_showspare1 and PlayerBindPress hook

or even

input.IsKeyDown with KEY_F3 (or whatever you want to use)

Not sure how discouraging him from learning helps.

You may have forgotten it, but gmodstore is a place to buy and sell scripts, not to learn.

Speaking of "well if a lot of people do it, it must be right!!!"

Look at this shit

Signed 32 bits

Why not just Unsigned 20 bits ??????
