Need someone to optimize my code ;)

Hello,

my newest project is almost finished: **Vertibird **(Inspired by Fallout, just because I like the name)

What is Vertibird?

Vertibird is a (free to use/workshop) security/scanning system, which allows you to scan (currently only servers) if they've been reported as being known for either illegal activities (such as scamming users) or using/contributing leaks. It also offers a "Certification" System, so servers which are proven to be legit can apply for such a certificate. It works pretty easy: Open Console: enter "vtb_scan [Server IP]" and It'll scan the server (search it in the db's).

Features

  1. Illegal/Leakers database
  2. Certification system
  3. Web based databases (no need to update the addon for small db changes)
  4. Auto DB-Updates

Planned Features

  1. Server-Side scanning of dangerous users
  2. GUI

What I need you for

I'm a beginner lua coder and I did all I can, but I'm unable to finish the addon. I'd say 80-90% is finished but now I'm done with my knowledge. I currently need someone who wants to:

Generally improve the code

Improve the search algorithm (currently powered by http.fetch)

And to fix some small bugs I'll explain to you

Why should you help me?

There's actually no good reason... This is my present to Scriptfodder, to all the creative and unique developers... This is the beginning of my fight against leakers who want to do harm to you by leaking you work! Protecting you stuff, your hard work is my goal and I'm doing this 100% voluntary. See it as a present. That's why I'm searching for volunteers. I know that this system probably won't have any success, but it's a sign. You help me to optimize my code, I offer you the web server for it and of course a huge promotion for you on my profile and on all my workshop items <3

I don't care how dumb some of you might think about this idea, for me it is a great practice, a way to improve my reputation and most of all a huge "thank you" to all SF Developers and the team!

If you are actually interested, just add me on steam (don't forget to leave a comment before you add me)

I hope someone wants to help me, if not; I'll either abandon this project or I'll wait until I've gained enough knowledge to fix it...

doesn't seem like a dumb idea, but the way it can be abused and exploited is vaguely huge.

for instance, how are you submitting/getting data from your databases? are you registering people who scan and then making them wait a cool down or something to prevent a huge spam key?

Not going to trust you to hold a legit database. You have no credibility, and this could really fuck over people you don't like.

@Lunaversity I don't think there is any way to abuse it, I don't think a simple http.fetch request would take down a website... Otherwise I'll just add a cooldown or sth. like that

Sure it could.. But if you don't trust me then don't use it. Check my profile, I really do everything possible to me to be as legit as possible. Furthermore am I planning to make a Webpage where you can view why someone is on the database (with provided proof)

Aswell: I'm doing this in the name of my clan. We provided every useful informations you need to show in Germany (Address, Phone Number etc.) of our Clan Leader, so we are not quite unlegit.

I still respect your opinion, thank you.

You didn't answer my actual question:

how are you push/pulling data from your database?

are you just getting data from an OPEN database?

I think Luna somewhat meant about players abusing the addon. You said this: "which allows you to scan (currently only servers) if they've been reported as being known for either illegal activitie"...

If it's the general players of Garry's mod who report servers, what's stopping people just report servers because they want to. If it's server owners who report servers, they report other servers to try and increase players on theirs. Then if it's you which reports servers, why should one person judge? Unless you have a system in place to prevent these problems, it will happen.

#7

Oh sorry, of course there will be submitting guidelines, no proof means no database entry :) I'll make the database , it's a simple php file. I'll either figure out a report system with Google forms or another service...

I love the idea and if this doesn't end up happening, we could allways make a community based on exposing servers and have a group of moderators to approve posts, but if this does happen, i'd happily be a moderator on it and approve/deny reports

This has already been discussed before, and shown why it's a bad idea.

Just saying "Don't use it" is a dumb excuse, and isn't valid to use.

Yeah, I do respect that, then tell me please, what do I need to do/change to be trustful?

#11

It's nothing you can do immediately. You have no rep built up, you're not going to magically become trustful over night.

Yeah, you're right. But because I can't/I don't want to sell scripts here, it's pretty hard to get a good reputation (jobs are a little bit harder)... That's why I set my focus on my profile... And yes, I know a profile isn't the best solution, but I currently don't know any better way...

jobs and showing yourself around the community pays as reputation

I'm not talking about the number on SF. I legit don't know you, you have no reputation for anything.

I'm not going to want to trust you with anything because you have nothing backing that.

Im mostly known in the German Area by some famous communities... Maybe my Workshop counts?

nah, people are trusting you to not take advantage of this system, exposing people is kinda a big responsibility you gotta have people you trust and just giving random ass people moderator and saying "this nigga is a scammar" is something people don't want to be treated wrongfully, plus we're late to the party but something like this is coming out as soon as lazy devs stop being lazy.

Mh, that's why I want to extend the System, so there aren't Just databases containing the ips, I want to have little tables like this: {ServerIP:Port, Reason, BanID} and I want to give people the ability to search the banID on a website containing the proofs so they can verify why someone has been banned...

Proof or not, the people running the show are not reputable that means we have no reason to trust you or someone outside this community to have this big of a responsibility to carry out such accusations against other people.

#19

You don't have to Trust me if you can see clear evidences of servers using leaks or scamming users. No proof, no database entry.

#20

Who decides that proof? You? Again, lack of trust.
