Hide public IP from local server

Anyone know how to hide public ip from local server(without going offline)? I just noticed when I start and join my local dev server, anyone can see my real ip address by clicking view game info.

Use a VPN perhaps? Not sure how Gmod works with that sort of thing.

I don't think there's any other way than going offline or using a VPN. It's either the Engine or just the Steam browser showing it, so I believe there's no way to really change it. But it'd interest me if anyone finds a solution.

Iirc connecting to your server through the local IP instead of the internal one will show the local IP, thus preventing people on your friend's list from seeing the server IP unless you obviously send it to them. Otherwise, as I'm sure you know - the other option is adding sv_lan 1 to the command line when you don't want it being open to the public. That will definitely show your local IP to others - keeping your public IP private.

Isnt local ip same as internal ip? Only way I can connect is through the local/internal ip, local ip is shown in the server browser regardless - still, game info is set to public ip. you cant even join through it since ports are not forwarded.

sv_lan 1 thingy in the commandline doesnt seem work, ip is still public

You can just rent a $3 VPS for the sake of a test server

obviously - i can rent a vps but its not as ideal for development as the local server.

I fail to see what the issue is? If you are afraid of people knowing your IP address then you better get off the net altogether. No matter what MP game you play anyone can get your IP address. Stop being scared that some 5 year old is going to ddos you or something dumb.

If you replied just to increase your post count, you could at least do what some other people do here and try to write something funny.

sv_lan 1 goes in server.cfg not commandline

once it's set to lan it should default to your ipv4 instead of your public address

sv_lan 1 in server.cfg doesnt make any difference same as commandline. server behaves like its in lan anyway the public/internet ip is shown only on the steam profile. this was not the case always, it must have been one of the updates past couple of months.

hm, try putting the -ip part in the command line to your ipv4

To be honest, I am not sure what you mean by "your ipv4", my internet IP? I don't think that makes much sense. I tried -ip 192.168.1.5 that just made the server not possible to join. In any case, it seems to be an issue with steam itself because server is working on local address even in server browser it shows local address. Its just that steam profile gets the public address and shares that.

Have you tried typing "connect localhost" from that?

No, that doesn't work.

ipv4 is another internet protocol that's usually used in local games sometimes cause if u connect to it you'll connect to whatever local server you're running.

There's not much u can do in terms of blocking your public address from being viewed from steam I don't think, plus it's labeled as a public address cause everyone can see it if u go on their site, etc.. Lots of other developers have their ips out while testing stuff and nothing happens cause you can just change ur ip (if it's dynamic) if some skid is trying to ddos you.

Only thing that I can think of that can help you in this situation is a VPN, although I do not know how good that will work with a server that you host. A different option is making your profile private which then will not show what server you are playing on.

ipv4 is an internet protocol, it doesn't mean it's a local address.

A simple solution in my opinion would just be to go offline when developing. No distractions plus they can't see your IP.
