Where do you guys learn coding from?
Hello gmodstore community!
I just got a question to all coders. Where do you guys learn this stuff from? I always wanted to make a script but I never know where to start learning from. I know there is the gmod wiki. But where did you guys learn from? Youtube, reading, other scripts, etc?
Taking other developer's scripts apart, and learning what made them tick. And then as you start writing your own code, you're going to see that your style of writing code changes over time. I've gone through... 5 major changes? And as you mentioned, the wiki. That wiki is your gmod bible. It explains every function, library, hook, etc. I keep it open whenever I'm writing code for my scripts.
CodeBlue's youtube tutorials, he's a great tutor - Then, again, practice, practice and as Richard said, I got stuck somewhere - Tried my hacky ways and imagination, if that didn't work, then taking other devs scripts apart :)

Exact same.
I liked making websites so I just started doing it, whatever you like to do will be easier to understand than forcing yourself to do something like Lua.
Making a discord bot in lua taught me a lot though, and that carried into gmod with some help from friends.
I was born a programming god. I didn't learn how to code, I taught the code how to be.
How dare you speak to god that way.... careful, he's going to turn you into a frog.
And since you drew attention to yourself [Postino] -- why have you disputed 50% of the scripts you own?

i wanted to dispute a script a while back because the author simply didn't answer for what is two months by now and i fucked up, but in the meantime i disputed the wrong script
i severely apologized to the owner of the wrong script and immediately cancelled the dispute, and i got the script back
I'll PM you, so we don't derail this thread. Carry on with the original topic.
Yeah, I kinda just learned from other things. I took a class in school that required javascript so that helped.

Just because you like making websites doesn't mean you are good at it :P jk. You only need to work on front end. (Don't worry, I have no visual skills, too)

That's good. Is it hard at first? Then gets easier as it goes on? Or is just everything hard?

That depends on the script that you take apart. Maybe set up a local gmod server and start fucking around. Look at examples and start seeing what they do. Once you start figuring it out, it becomes almost like a second language.

If you have no previous experience with programming; it can be a challenge yeah. But it does get easier over time. You'll start reading code and understand what it does right off the bat. It's all trial and error. Plugging something in, seeing if it works -- finding better ways to make it work. But with enough practice, you'll be able to do things more easily as time progresses.
Okay, thanks for all the advance. I always wanted to learn how to script, just didnt know where to start
