Hello,

Excuse me if I cause any of you to be annoyed with me, but I'm just going to make a little introduction here really quick. My name is Inspector, I'm what you might call a "Garry's student at work". I've been playing Gmod for a very long time now (2-4 years), and I fell in love with the game you guys script for, play on and love with all of your hearts.

As of recently, I have been on the Facepunch side of things, but I have to say they aren't so kind over at Facepunch hahaha. Anyways I wanted to make this thread to ask a few of you guys questions and to express my feelings towards the Gmod community thus far :P

First let me start off and say that the most of the content creators on here are awesome and I wish I could learn from every single one of them! Shouts out to Shendow, Freemmaann, <CODE BLUE>, Quack, Richard and all the other amazing content creators on here! I have seen your work and I wish I had the skills to make what you have made.

Now, to cut to the chase let me explain what my plan was by coming here. Basically I want to be able to learn anything I can about programming for Garry's Mod. I know a lot of the basics, but I'm looking for guides (besides the gmod wiki) and resources to help me learn everything I can about modeling, Lua, PHP, etc (anything that has been used to make things on on this website/store). I'd appreciate any assistance you can give me in terms of learning resources.

Things I already have for resources:

- Gmod wiki
- maurits wiki (outdated I know)
- Lua's first edition digital book
- Omni Ed's, <CODE BLUES>'s, etc vidoes (anything on Youtube I might have seen or have bookmarked for viewing later on so I can take notes)

If anyone is also kind enough and feel they can take some time out of their day to teach the noob that's me their methods of coding and content creation, then I'd be more than glad to be a student of sorts for a day or two or forever lol. Having a teacher for Gmod has been a dream of mine lately, so if anyone has the time and is nice enough, please don't be afraid to contact me :)

Glad to make my first thread here. Thanks for taking the time to read it!

This isn't exactly a "guide or resource", but it's a "tip".

The best way to learn (in my opinion) is to actually do practical things. Dive in head first and try and create something that you don't think you could do. Make a SWEP that throws the player in the air when they left click. May seem hard, but it's actually pretty simple. Set yourself a task, and try to achieve it. As you get stuck along the way, refer to the gmod wiki or better yet, ask someone. I get messages all the time about people wanting help with Lua issues, and I always help them because there was a time I was like them. My point is, you need to really push and explore to fully understand. Programming is easy once you understand how to tackle it.

I agree with Owain. How ever don't do what most people do, and that is that they start coding and try to sell there work instantly then get rejected by the community and mods. This puts alot of people down and causes them to quit coding all together. When you start, you should be coding for YOUR SELF. Make any ideas, even if they cannot be sold, or if it means copying someone elses script go for it. Get to a point where you confident that you can sell your work and trust yourself that people will like it, and its to a quality that is acceptable. View the source code of other scripts if your confused how someone did something. And lastly, just like owain said, make sure you dont restrict yourself to the knowledge you already have. Always set your self tasks you don't think you can do because that way you will learn more. And thanks for the shout out, welcome to the community.

One thing some people do is endlessly browse for help or resources, do it initially and then dive in, don't get stuck tricking yourself into thinking you're doing something productive when in reality you're just delaying the real work through mindless web surfing.

Thanks for the tips, it has been helpful thus far. So keep it coming, I'd love to get all views possible on this one. Just to give another quick update, currently I have set my mind to a player HUD, which of course is just basic surface.create stuff, but I find it fun and I will be messing around with that for a bit and maybe make another thread to help me give it critiques and such.

Yes, I know it's not as much time as others and I can respect the whole "you're still a noob" treatment hahaha. Although I did calculate it and I can say that I've spent 3 years+ playing Garry's Mod alone.

Might be time to get off the Gmod store and start working on this HUD more lmao.

Edit

I did end up starting my HUD, although I haven't finished it. Mainly because I still have to figure out how to add Hungermod compatibility and because the HUD itself is too big and blocks the chat. I know how to shape it and I will look into the Hungermod things some more. However I just want to say that this is my first script ever made by scratch and that I was inspired to take aim at this because of everyone's great feedback! Thank you all very much!

Good looks man, good luck with your learning. If you find anything extremely useful besides what you mentioned above throw it my way in a PM. I'm trying to learn what I can as well so I don't have to bug these beautiful Content Creators with my problems all the time. ;D Hope it works out for ya!
