Atom text editor - enhance how you code
https://atom.io/ Hello minions, still stuck with shitty sublime or not so shitty notepad++? I know ARitz cracker is!
What is atom?
Atom is a hackable (all the way to the core!) text editor for the 21st century made by yours truly GitHub!
Why should I switch to atom
If you're currently using a free text editor (such as sublime, or notepad++) you will most likely want to switch to atom as it has everything those editors have but more with packages made by the community! Worried about viruses with the packages? Ha! no need every package is open source because they're all published to github.
It's easy to install packages, it's a 1 step process. Here's an example of their installation process:
This goes for themes too, aka UI and syntax themes for atom, most of sublimes themes are on atom, along with notepad++.
What are some good packages?
Well here's a bit for each of the people on this site:
General:
- Remote-FTP -- Is what it says, connect to your ftp server within atom easily.
- Pigments -- Colors color code that you add, aka: rgb(255,0,255) would be bright pink
- Minimap -- Just like sublime on the right it lets you preview your code in a minimap
- HTMLPreview -- Let's you preview your HTML code in a side pane
People who enjoy Lua development would like:
- GLua Language -- A language registration for GLua
- GLua linter -- A program helper if you make any errors in your code
People who enjoy web development would like:
- Emmet -- Makes web development 10 times faster with it's shift+tab bind to automatically input classes, ids, even pages.
- Linters(html, css,js,etc) -- Detects broken/bad code and shows you ways to resolve them.
Program with another language/method? Well if you want you can search the packages for yourself! https://atom.io/packages/ https://atom.io/themes/
Speed?
It all depends on what packages you have installed, atom directly tells you how much MS your installed packages will take to start up, it's not a big deal but for people who want to be uber fast, if you have an SSD that runs fast, you should be good with the standard packages. Just try not to over do it with packages you might not use.
That's pretty much it
Do you use atom? You should share some stuff about it, what theme do you use, what packages do you enjoy? Hopefully this convinces some people to switch to atom, it's definitely better than other free alternatives.
I didn't get payed for this, just wanted to do something fun.
Here's a preview of Emmet in action:

Neth got me into Atom. I still use sublime sometimes because I'm more use to the internal-ftp plugin so I can edit/save on the fly, but I still migrate to Atom sometimes just to get more comfortable with it. I'm one of those people that I don't like change lol, and I just like the way I have sublime setup with my syntax highlighting. Maybe I'll make a sublime->atom syntax highlighter at some point just to match sublime. That will make it easier for me to switch.

Ye that's great, if you ever wanted to make your own syntax, it's ezpz, especially with their .less support. Most of the time you can import most of your sublime syntax's to atom. Thing I enjoyed about sublime was their small and sleek font, but atom you can add any font you want.

Luna got me into Atom before this thread. I'm having a hard time migrating too, but it's just because I've been with Sublime for years. Atom can be highly customized to fit whatever syntax/fillers you need. I personally love Atom because of the remote-ftp package. Basically sublime's SFTP package, but with a remote directory on the left-hand side. I can switch through folders and files to edit them with ease. PHP in Atom was a little difficult at first, but after editing the package's core files I was able to set up binds for the perfect autocomplete. Peace Sublime!

Nice. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

Ima look into it, I do like atom a lot
I did try out Atom once. Got back into np++. Will give it another shot thanks to Luna.
Always used NP++, Atom feels so weird, but I know I should give it a shot.
but after 2-3 months
I don't think any good IDE need you more than 3 days to adapt.
I moved to Sublime Text and i only use npp for it's escaped char search/replace function.
oh
