Your internet is at risk here! Net Neutrality must be protected
So since I haven't seen any posts about this (sort of surprising) and since this is a major issue that everyone, not just in the Garry's Mod community, but anyone who uses the internet needs to know about, its the fact that your internet is at risk of being limited heavily. Just in case someone doesn't know what Net Neutrality is, it's a set of rules (set by the FCC) that restricts ISPs (Internet Service Providers) from treating websites unequally. Without Net Neutrality, your internet service can restrict you from seeing let's say Twitch so that you only watch YouTube (or restricts both). To give a better and much simpler way to understand, as well as to give more reason as to why these rules are important, let's say you, or a family member starts a restaurant. Let's say McDonald's doesn't like the fact that you or your family member started a restaurant, and puts a block on the restaurant so that people can only go where ever McDonald's feels like it. If you don't want someone controlling what you can or can't do on the internet (without paying extra), then your best interest is to help keep these rules in place for not only your freedom but everyone's freedom.
If you don't know how to stop this from happening, here are a few things you can try:
- Email/write to your senator telling them to do something before the FCC does a vote.
- Participate in protests
If you find any other ways, please ensure that we keep our freedom to use any website without extra costs, otherwise, we all pay the cost (the cost of unlocking access to certain features).
I can't really do much when being outside of US. However, if it does pass, you can be sure it will have a ripple effect through the rest of the world.
Not only is the FCC trying to repeal Net Neutrality, they are trying to make sure that states cannot pass laws that basically do the same thing. And, they are trying to make sure that the FCC can never create rules like that again. They are really trying to make the internet more like cable TV packages.

Email/write to your senator telling them to vote no on removing Net Netruality.
The only issue with this is that itโs the FCC commissioners that vote on the issue. Congress can get involved and pass a bill if they have to, but net neutrality is not a bill, just a set of rules.
The main person that is in charge of this is the FCC chairman Ajit Pai (a former Verizon lawyer, yay).
And instead of a senator, maybe contacy your representative in the house. They are more entitled to listen to you because you are in their district.
Overall, the freedom of the internet in the US is in danger. If you want to make a comment you can go to https://www.battleforthenet.com/
Edited Also, there are many petitions on whitehouse.gov that you can look through on this issue. Here is one to remove Ajit Pai from the FCC: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/we-people-call-resignation-fcc-chairman-ajit-varadaraj-pai
i agree to have this on no nut november (block the disgusting pornography!) but no other month.
haha who would have guessed Trump would bring in a good FCC chairman gottem
most of the congressmen voting on this are republicans so it's very obvious they're with the ISIS Leader (Pai, he's literally an ISIS member just look at him) so there's really nothing we can do with voice (look what happened last time but we're back at it again democracy is a funny meme)
buuut painting verizon walls with blood might get their attention
Jesus the USA have terrible internet, you pay a lot of money for almost nothing, and now you even get idiots who tries to destroy the neutrality.

fucking kek
You already pay a very expensive bandwidth and they want to remove your rights .... pitiful.
I'm in the UK so really I don't think it applies to me. (As of now this is). Like freemmaann said it could have a ripple effect across the world.
Anyway good luck to the US to protect their rights on the internet.
I was going to start laughing at how Mr bobs and vegena was ready to screw everyone over but I think the Uk and other non European countries might get affected via "ripple effect". The EU is invincible to having NN removed https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/policies/open-internet-net-neutrality but the UK however, since we are leaving the EU (the fully legalised and actual procedure and not just politions saying we are) soon, it might affect us but correct me if I'm wrong.
Also in terms of coverage the media and TV will benefit from this in business perspective so it's why hardly any or any TV talk shows or news corporations have talked about this since this is a big money win for them. I suppose money does make the world go round
There are tons of other countries who don't have it or enforce it leaving countries like Portugal to shit like this: https://www.meo.pt/internet/internet-movel/telemovel/pacotes-com-telemovel . As far as the possibilities of a ripple effect go, it's those countries who look to the the U.S. as an example who you have to worry about (which is definitely none of them in the EU)

You live in the UK, but any US companies you use would be affected, and other countries that disallow inequality over the internet, could look at this and think to remove their rules on it too.

Well yes. Of course. But I'm sure everyone should and will do everything to protect their rights.

No??????
Access and speeds to certain sites gets restricted on a per ISP basis. Actual companies do not use these telecoms for hosting their services. That'd just be dumb.

Funny thing is the UK usually like to do what the US does, so have fun when they decide "lol let's throttle people too"
it no doubt will be a world wide thing after a while if throttling becomes the norm, cause it saves companies more and more money and gets them more money, so obviously who wouldn't wanna do it

While this is true, the UK has WAY stricter laws in place that do the same thing. But, who knows? They might follow us and they might not.

We've already shown we don't have any by our elected president and how this is continuing to be an issue (cause in July millions of people where against it, but yet here we still are) (also not saying hillary is better, cause the dike isn't but the people's vote got outweighed by a couple of elector voters :v)
US is just communism disguised as a democracy, it's not even a meme anymore

I hope so, not a lot of people understand the importance of the internet's freedom.
