[GUIDE] Which Server-Host is the best?

Last read Never

As I've seen that the number of "Which Server-Host is the best?"-Threads is extremely increasing for whatever reason I've decided to take some time to simply answer it for everyone.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with any of the following companies nor am I being paid for saying anything positive, I've never even been customer at on of them. My research is solely based on the last few threads about this topic and other external resources I've all listed below.

Introduction

So, you found a unique idea you now want to realize, but you're stuck on finding the best host for you? Well this is for you and I really hope I can answer all of your questions. If not, don't hesitate to ask anything. Also, having a good host won't make your server 100% lag free, you have to know how to optimize it to make it run smoothly. You should also know, that finding the best host isn't easy, it's like finding a good Anti-Virus software: Everyone say's the one they are using is the best and every other product is shit. So many people will hopefully agree with me, but some will surely not.

What's important?¹

That's easy. Gmod Server don't really require that much performance, but the following specs are recommended for 1 Gmod Server:

  1. RAM: 2-4 GB. Gmod it self is a 32 bit software so it can use more than 4 GB, but I've never seen a GmodServer using more than 2GB.
  2. GPU: This is a server, if any host offers you a GPU then you're at the wrong host, Gameservers certainly never use GPUs
  3. CPU: This is the most Important. Gmod is only using 1 Core, so look for Single-Core performance CPU, 16 Cores with a low Single-Core performance is much more expensive and way less efficient than a very efficient Duo or Quad Core CPU
  4. vServer or Dedicated Server? - vServer for Start-Ups. They should be sufficient for the beginning, for more than 40 users/day use a Dedi if needed.
  5. OS: Windows or Linux? Hard to say, Linux normally has the better performance, but I also heard it's less stable than Windows. Windows is a lot easier to handle and I see many big servers actually running Windows successfully. But you should probably go with Linux.

The Server-Hosts

(Sorted alphabetically)

Crident

(targets EU communities)⁶

TrustPilot²: 8.3 (from 0 - 10)

Pretty Cheap⁷

Good Support ⁸

Good DDos mitigation ⁸

Clean Website / Contol Panel ⁸

(Owner) involved in GmodStore Community/Discord ¹

Overall recommended by almost everyone ¹/¹¹

In my opinion not transparent enough, they should straight up display the exact server specs (Not that big of a deal).

GMC

(targets US communities)⁶

TrustPilot³: 8.8 (from 0 - 10)

Used by the biggest Communities⁹

Good Support ⁸

Good DDos mitigation ⁸

Clean Website / Contol Panel ¹

More expensive than Crident (But still OK) ¹/⁷

NFO

** - Needs some more research - **

OVH

(Only for dedicated Servers/Big Communities)

TrustPilot⁵: 2.9 (from 0 - 10) (Not sure why so low...)

Used by Crident and GMCHosting ⁸

Website Clean and professional ¹

Pretty expensive¹

No V-Servers (Cant blame them for that)¹

So which is the best?

1# Crident

  1. In my opinion the best around, especially for EU based Servers

#2 GMC

  1. In my opinion also pretty nice, I'd recommend it for any US based Servers

#3 OVH

  1. Want a really big Community? Go with their "MC-64-OC" Server! ¹²

#4 NFO

(Unrated)

That's it.

If you now have any trouble about setting up your Gmod Server and about the configuration, you may contact me and I'll help you either for free or for a small amount of money. Also I want to excuse myself for any grammar mistakes, English isn't my first language and it took me 3 hours to create this guide, I'm pretty much dead right now. Also the mod team may stick this if the quality is sufficient.

I wish you good luck with your Gmod Server.

GMC isn't good for US, their servers are based in Canada for US just re-routed or some shit to the East. Lots of people want west coast servers, so hosting from the east, let alone using a host from the east that's actually in the far north can really fuck up ping, Me and Richard tried w/ OVH (host gmc uses) and it never worked out, even when I lived in Washington I still got 200+ ping, while Richard got more cause obvi further away from Canada. Not to mention most GMC servers have over 200+ ping while I'm sittin' here in the US, and a TF2 Virginia server only gives me 100 max.

NFO is the best US host so far because the most hosts now-a-days are just people who "buy muh ovh server" so it's obviously always Canada and EU based, while NFO is known to have the absolute best latency for servers, but not so much the best ddos protection, I've never had a problem with their support either, I can get why they don't offer support on in-game addons, that's people's main issue w/ their support, other than people being dumb, they're pretty quick and friendly (and we're talking around the clock quick). And finally, while NFO might not have the best when it comes to styles, the main part you're always going to be on (your admin panel) has theme options that make it look beautiful, but just cause their main site doesn't have a design that's appealing these days, doesn't mean they're a shit host, so idk why you want to have that as a downside (https://i.lunaversity.xyz/9rr3.png).

Crident has been building it self really well which has made it one of the bests hosts so far, even over GMC and NFO combined, sooner or later they're gonna switch to the US, and most customers from NFO or for some reason GMC are gonna switch to them cause they honestly do have some of the best services that are provided.

OVH isn't a good option either, especially if u want a full on-dedi, their support is just absolutely shit, the nightmares Richard had trying to get the server to stop fucking up was terrible, so you should stick w/ hosts that use them, but have better methods in terms of support n' what not (such as Crident).

Well if I'm completely wrong with that, I'll research it again, the thing is from just looking it up, I could not find any positive argument/review sticking out, my bad.

Why do people just not bother to look for hosts who run there own servers from a data centre rather than just host from a GSP using a rented crappy french OVH server. Loads of UK community's will run from french OVH servers and it just blows my mind.

Well if I'm completely wrong with that, I'll research it again, the thing is from just looking it up, I could not find any positive argument/review sticking out, my bad.

I've been a customer for NFO for about 3-4 years now and I have some insight on how they preform compared to some random nut buying a server, not knowing how to install addons, then giving them a bad review.

Their main focus is latency, that's one of the main reasons why they're probably expensive, but definitely not good at having top of the line ddos protection, while in term, their ddos protection can protect against $5 to maybe $50 booters. They're constantly answering tickets, that means your usual wait time is anywhere from 10 minutes to at max an hour, people just get pissed cause their agents don't give them script support, which is reasonable cause who would for a third party item.

I've had 1 issue with them in my years of using them, a darkrp detard retard was using almost all of our nodes' cpu (somehow) on about a couple of cores, so I noticed and asked if they could switch our CPU, and they did, it took 15 minutes and bada bang, our server is still the same, we're just on different hardware and everything runs fine and no more cpu peaks.

The only main issue people have with NFO is:

  1. Their ddos protection
  2. The fact they're a popular host, so regardless people are going to shit on them
  3. Their pricing

All of these are explained easily and debunked. Hell if you want, you can ask them yourself why they don't provide better ddos protection options, it's simply their provider, they risk ddos protection for absolute beast latency, which in my opinion is a complete win. Side note: if you get one of their premium locations (no extra cost) you get extra protection (listed here: https://www.nfoservers.com/networklocations.php) over normal ones.

In all: NFO is far from a bad host, but they're not the best host, they're more or less higher than average middle ranking.

There's your positive and negative feedback.

Edited:

Thinking about it, they're not really over priced for the stuff they provide, especially in America's economy, but if you're foreign, like I said, NFO is the best US host so far.

Clearly you should just host your own game servers off a server in your basement! The power costs, security risks, or bandwidth totally won't decimate you!

Serious note - NFO is good. Read above for why.

We have a 70 slot jb server that averages probably around 40 players + 7 other gmod servers running fine on a dedicated box (Chicago, E3-1270v3 or E3-1271v3, they're basically the same except minor clock speed difference) from NFO.

http://www.opstonline.com//index.php/page,serverlist.html all hosted on one(two now actually I guess..) NFO dedi (community is dying, but after they switched to a dedi a year or two ago everything sped up and the servers never went down or had problems apart from major ddos attacks)

not to mention I ran 2 30 slot unturned servers (that filled up pretty much everyday) on 1 vps and nothing bad ever happened and everyone's pings where fabulous since they where all BR connecting to LA

Edited finally u can find major servers here too: https://www.nfoservers.com/clientserverlisting.php (these servers are only displayed if the owner of the server checks off a box, so not all nfo servers are here)

I've never seen them offer those kinds of CPU's before unless it's for a Dedicated server. When I was a client a few months ago I kept getting the 10 year old Xeon E5's clocking at less than 2.5 ghz.

Edited To add to this, OVH is not a bad host at all. You're getting bad pings because your ISP is probably shit. I am in Texas and get < 50 ping to OVH Canada. OVH also offers WAY better specs than NFO for much less and much better DDoS protection.

By that logic, if it was an ISP issue, that would mean over 60-80 people from Richard and my community combined in America all had bad ISPs. Even though what you said is just down right dumb, I don't believe u actually get under 50 ping from Texas to Canada, I have a friend with a common high grade ISP that lives in Dallas and gets over 200 ping in OVH Canada servers. Whatever server you're joining, it isn't from Canada or you're giving out incorrect ping numbers.

OVH may offer better specs and ddos protection, but they risk ddos protection for latency, just like NFO risks ddos protection for latency, it's all matter of "what do I think is best for my community" and latency sure is one cause even with 10-100gbps of ddos protection that'll keep you safe from most ddos attacks that are commonly used unless u get hit hardcore.

Let's finally not forget how shit OVH's support is, don't need to even explain how terrible it is take gmodstore for example: they just ripped out the plug on their machine one day to do a reboot or some gay shit. Along with that Richard tried for months and months to get 1 hardware issue solved and OVH never fixed it, their support is down right shit.

Ok the support isn't legendary, but I've never had anyone on my server had a ping issue with OVH. I am 100% certain this is an OVH machine and our pings are correct lol. Most users average < 50 like I do, we have users from all over the world. I've never had an issue with my OVH machine and I really think something was wrong with your server network config. I had the same issue at first, but when I messed around with the network vars the ping was basically Identical to NFO Chicago.

My IP is 198.50.141.13, also a ping test below

Just gonna re-write my message cause I was being dumb and thinking pinging meant everything but when all my texan friends tracerouted they got 100-80 ping even more

I live in North Nevada (closer to Canada than Texas) with the popular broadband here known as Spectrum, with an average speed test I get about 30 ping compared to Canada servers with my normal internet but with the games I'm getting these:(the ones that are US are from GMC aka Canada but re-routed to NYC)Everyone else who is West Coast (Cali - Arizona - Washington) I talked to is getting this too, but a different friend (than the one I referenced earlier) is getting 50 ping, I'm not sure what type of guru OVH is pulling but I'm seriously doubting you guys have a legitement 50 ping, it's probably masked or some shit.If you're using Verizon I can kinda see how that'd work since they're the most scummiest but also the best performance ISP in the US, but still, you should open net_graph 4 in your server and test it out yourself instead of using a cmd prompt.I'm mind boggled on this.Editedtry tracerouting your server

I found your problem, Spectrum! It's said to be the worse ISP in the USA. All our players have pings that are fine, Spectrum may be throttling your connection to OVH.

Tracert: https://gyazo.com/cc856de09d194cd50a4a8f3f255a4153

Also the ping in netgraph says about 70. All other means like the scoreboard say < 50.\

My internet far from the best also, AT&T is the best provider for home/business in the US in terms of Fiber.

Spectrum is a really good provider, I completely edited my message above cause I forgot pinging wasn't everything, trace routing gets the most.

Scoreboard doesn't say your exact ping all the time, what does is net_graph 4 or status / ping in console.

Even then, in reality, you shouldn't be getting better ping than someone closer by about 2000 miles of the datacenter it's just a given. So your ping on the server in real time should be around 130-140 and maybe 110 at minimum in Texas. Cause it's just not possible for you to have better ping than someone who's closer to the datacenter in general.

I know it may be saying I am getting high latency on one of their routers, but this really has no affect on me in-game. There's not a slight bit of lag when playing, it performs pretty perfectly.

Edited Also what I just thought of, if you bought from a reseller of OVH they may be overloading their network/machines.

Edited

That is 100% false. I think you need to stop thinking so high of Spectrum, they are seriously garbage. I'm not saying my provider is 100% fiber optic with 1ms latency to Dallas, but I mean it has to be better than Spectrum. Many things other than physical location can affect ping.

Edited Ok this is my bad, I confused Spectrum with Comcast. Sorry about that, I just knew one of them were complete garbage.

It's not the fact that it's my ISP, I've literally asked a handful of friends to give me their traceroute results and they've all came up with about the same results (locations where: Cali, Arizona and Washington) one of my friends has Fiber and he had about 20 ping less than everyone else in the mix, but everyone else had a decent 100 ping, even the Washington dude using Comcast.
