My thoughts on Digital Rights Management
omg i'm offended, stop being rude to my customers

I can agree that ones that use that script are dumb, but then again he made a lot of sales thru dumb people buying it. The point is, if you can earn on dumb people, why not?
If you can ruin DarkRP, why not? See, everyone here is used to sh*tty server owners, no wonder we have to use DRM.

Assuming that you're a server owner, why don't you just pay developers to work for your community and make content for you/your community? Or just avoid scripts that are DRM protected.
why is this conversation still a thing?

Probably because he needs to show what a big "server man" he is and show how is he a privileged user of script fodder. It is almost as like they don't earn enough money to hire a dev. To be honest, it is cheaper to buy a script here than to pay a dev hourly rate for a custom script.
Everyone does whatever the fuck they want to, they want a DRM in their scripts? Cool, lets them have it. You don't want an addon that is DRM protected? Well don't fucking buy it then. It is such a simple concept yet not so many people seem to grasp it, it is almost like this thread had to be posted because someone felt like their opinion is important enough that they can change something they disagree with.
Thread title is "My thoughts on Digital Rights Management", why your thoughts were posted in the first place. Some people don't like their work stolen so what? DRM protects us from scums scamming us as well (chargeback). I frankly think that anyone that bitches about DRM (Without valid points) isn't mature enough to grasp its idea. Everyone is bitching when customer gets scammed (Script Enforcer closed, people losing money or some companies using scammy techniques) but noone seems to care about the content creators.
People still think that GModStore shouldn't exist, that scripts should be free for everyone. But this is what enabled some people to make high quality addons, and it quite changed peoples lives. (Freemanns case, he was able to help his family and move out, isn't this great what SF enabled him to do?) Is it really bad, that we want to GIVE something to you, for a small price for our effort, and with a little of protection, knowing that our work doesn't get stolen.
I wanna say, that I was against DRM, but after getting my script leaked with very rude comments, and getting myself chargebacked (Really? who takes time to call their credit card company to reverse 7$ translaction? how low do you have to be), I am slowly changing my stance towards it. I think I can say that I am unbiased, badly implemented DRM can cause a lot of problems to a legitimate user.
Long story short; don't like it? Don't buy it. Express your thoughts in non-offending way and don't show how "privileged" you are. We don't care, in the end, we are all the same piece of shits./

.. did he manually assign him so that he can get a good review? FAKEEEEEEEEE!!!I have seen so many of those like wtf.
I never asked anyone to review my scripts, Commander after SE closed reviewer my addon 1/5, but he was kidding, and then changed the review to 5/5.
The same way billy gave me bWhitelist to make it work with ezjobs, and i reviewed it 5/5 because it's nicely done.
Also
Shit, i got rekt on the forums, better save my honor by making shitty review and getting banned one week like DiaZzZy

Why is this Glen skid not banned yet?
Pretty ironic considering you took our files from our community and claimed them as yours.
Now you're experiencing your bad karma.
What a shame.

Who?
I thought id make an appearance on this thread since my script "SFPortal" actually runs on a DRM. I am also going to educate all you haters out there and explain how it is actually beneficial to you the customer.
First of all DRM doesn't always "restrict" the user. Like Aritz was saying earlier he used a DRM where that on DOWNLOAD you get a ID generated also known as a DOWNLOAD ID. This can stored in a database then used for API callbacks
e.g. "Select * FROM table_name WHERE dlid = %s", $downloadid
Then you can do additional handles so that you only display the latest one where user is the same. So e.g. you have 5 downloads with the numeric key e.g. 1-5 with 5 being the latest. You can make it so that if your server/website is running the files from "1-4" then it wont work or it will "restricted" functionality depending on how you want to handle it as a developer. This way you can make it so that only the latest files are active and can be bound to multiple servers. Then if you want to track the installation you can write a code snippet into the callback where you "post" the server ip or domain or any other relevant data. This way doesn't INFRINGE on the customer as its not really harming anything as anybody who is running said content will be updating the server with the latest download or if they don't then you can just tweak to the callback where you check if field for "installation" is empty and if it is then ignore it. there are many viable ways to handle it without telling the user to "authorise" a server.
I addition to this you can also do what i did for SFPortal and that is "encode" the files so that they aren't editable - Website projects more than gameserver projects. This makes it so that people can't just "remove" segments of your code to null the license system and release a nulled copy. The only downside to this is that you require a "code library" to be installed to the gameserver/web server to "decode" the code for the addon/website. However most web hosts support these as they are used in standard industry practice. I do however admit my sourceguardian choice is less supported but it was chosen as it is relatively secure as regards how the encoding works and hasn't been cracked in some time. (not the latest versions at least) whereas ioncube had been broken (latest release).
Now i will explain the benefits to the user who buys said addon. Developers spend a lot of time building, patching and upgrading their addons without charging the user any additional cost outside of the form of a DLC which is still an optional payment. For example SFPortal has now been in the development for around 11 Months in total. Constantly evolving to suit the users needs.
Now look at it like this. I charge $20 a copy for a complete website with admin panel and web-server and server to web integration. Now go to any freelance site and price up how much an average developer costs per hour its around $10/hr for a cheap web developer. Now factor in the expected sales on GmodStore its not going to make you say $1000 easily even at that price by the time you factor in all the various taxes etc we developers have to pay to both GmodStore and Paypal. In order to keep the price down so we don't lose additional sales to things like leaks we sometimes choose to make a DRM system to suit the product and also to protect the products value. Some developers really don't care about being leaked as they have a good amount of sales. But for new developers on here like myself it can often be quite challenging to produce something knowing that once its leaked you may as well just "give" it away for free because lets be honest here. People don't like paying for things that they can get for free.
I would also like to mention that there are different types of DRM. For example we use a File Distribution Encoding DRM system so when you download your files are all personalised for EACH user. A Unique license ID is used to identify your site in the callbacks. Your Site has a back-end system where in which if you haven't responded to our server after X period of time then your site automatically "blocks" itself from being used - in case somebody tries banning the API server in case of a null. However this period isn't likely to be triggered by a standard user. The License system do a real time callback check at intervals not just on activation. We also use this same API to send upgrade details to the remote users panels to let them know a new upgrade is out and what the details are for this upgrade so they can upgrade it when they see an upgrade they like rather than forcing them to upgrade every version if there is nothing to benefit them.

dumb comparison. this is webdev 101, if you're making a fully customized site for a single person, of course you're going to charge more than if you were going to make a template site that hundreds of people buy and use.
edit: you've basically just explained how it's worse for the customer but good for profits ๐
DRM is a reaction to people who pirate scripts. If we could entrust people not to distribute content then we wouldn't need to put in. I understand why put it but at the same time if I'm running a server and have the main scriptenforcer go down or international traffic from my box cannot reach the drm auth server, I'm at a disadvantage. Fortunately whenever this has occurred (rarely since I own only a few scripts with scriptfodder in them), I've been lucky enough to have been assisted by developers who will (if asked nicely) just send across a drm version to resolve my specific problem.
Content creators need to be compensated for the work they do and shouldn't be robbed by individuals who don't want to spend more money on getting the real script from the dev. Too many times you can see servers which are just a mess of mods which they download from leaks. DRM has stopped this but at the inconvenience to a small amount of people. Boycotting isn't the answer to making this issue go away.

I can't take your post seriously when you run a leaked version of SantosRP.
I care if developers get the cash they are owed. SantosRP is run by a dickhead who parallel the autism of Killslick from PERP. They don't pay all the developers and they have disgruntled staff selling the gamemode.
Its not as cut and dry as you may think.

Considering I personally know the main developer I can tell you that you are completely wrong and talking out your ass, the devs are paid what they are owed.
If you knew anything you would know that Rustic was kicked out of their community ages back and stole a copy of the gamemode and started selling it to clowns like you who now think they have the legal right to run it.
With your whole reasoning on your website for legally being able to run it, I would be completely fine to download a leak of VCMOD as long as I edit it and be safe from any repercussions.

Hey man, I'm just telling you what I know about it from my own connections. You're saying you know the main dev, I'm talking about the wider picture of gents who have worked on it.
SantosRP Official Steam Group If Rustic7 was booted out, why is he still administrator on the steam group :D
Its not as clear cut as you are making it out to be so I'm gonna refer you to the facepunch thread you've already crawled to discuss it further to allow users in this thread to continue talking about how DRM affects them.
