Dedicated Server Discussion
Thinking about buying a dedicated server to host a few servers on, anyone have any experience with them? Going to get this one: https://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_servers/details-servers.xml?range=GAME&id=MC-32
Are dedicated servers worth the price in terms of performance, do they make that much difference in Garry's mod?
Dedicated servers will maximise the performance for your Garry's Mod server (Depending on specifications and how you run it). You have to keep in mind that GMOD servers only can utilise one core, therefore you have to work out what you really need.
If you are going for an I7 with 4c and 8 threads, personally I would not just use it for servers, but for other applications too.
If you buy directly off OVH you'll most likely have issues. As for performance there is a degree of luck as to how your CPU will perform if you're going with the i7 4790k. Their DDoS protection is also quite easy to find flaws in if you have google, but otherwise they offer an ok service from what I've heard.

Honestly, i used to run a server with OVH, and my I say, I was impressed
I had a dedicated machine and a vps (for teamspeak) and they both only went down once in 2 months, for scheduled maintenance. Even then, it was only for 30 mins.
So yea, I would recommend it, much better than hosts
How many servers could I run off it? Say if I assigned a DarkRP server with 64-100 slots as well as a few 20 slot servers such as TTT, PropHunt, deathrun, guess who etc.

You could easily run them, just remember to monitor the performance and impact of each server. Assigning each server to a thread/core would help too.

If he picks a CPU with hyperthreading, selecting cores would be plain dumb. That's what hyperthreading is for - so usage is split equally between cores, reducing usage.
I feel like people are starting these types of thread just for the drama now. There are what 3 threads with loads of replies then it turns into huge drama in this category.
Mainly cause we have server hosts that post here and you guys are tempting them to compete with each other.

Yes, spewing biased and 'overheard' info rather than purely empirical data is a problem of modern society.

So? It's a general discussion category. "Literally anything". If people want to cry over hosts and whatever that's fine by me. I'm just asking for some people's opinions on dedicated servers.
Also, there is no drama in here, just a normal discussion.

I don't really see how getting millions of collectively colliding answers is any helpful.
Why are you still posting here?
Well thanks for your input neth, really appreciate it :)))))

Not trying to be mean or anything, but when you post pointless topics like this where you clearly (as you stated) aren't looking for a real answer, but only for people to 'cry over hosts' then you should be ready for someone who'll stir shit up (me).
Can we hire a(n) anti-cancer moderator

The point was to get people's opinions on OVH and dedicated servers in general, if the general consensus was that they're shit then I wouldn't get one.
I never stated that the point was to make people "cry over hosts" I was just stating that they can if they want to and, if they do, I'll just ignore them.
When I started posting here I assumed that this would be a more mature forum than it turns out to be. I get that it's an "off topic" section and you can post what and how you want, but needless replies in my topic aren't really helping and just encouraging more "cancer" on the forum. I get that you want to have fun and "stir shit" but when I'm trying to get genuine advice about something it's not really helping me, or anybody in the future.
'The point was to get people's opinions on OVH' - is that why you discarded my opinion, calling it 'unhelpful'?
'if the general consensus was that they're shit' - did you really think everyone here will agree to one thing, that one thing being 'OVH is shit?' - especially when you got a mumbling idiot (Green Eagle) and a member of competition to reply?
'When I started posting here I assumed that this would be a more mature forum than it turns out to be' - playing the 'I'm more mature' card while at the same time overreacting to criticism regarding the purpose of this thread.. beautiful.
"I get that you want to have fun and "stir shit" but when I'm trying to get genuine advice" - Look at my posts from top to bottom, I was putting other opinions in doubt until you called my opinion (and a post) 'unhelpful'. I really don't see how a proper conclusion can be made, when opinions aren't questioned and the opinion-makers aren't forced to argument their picks.
I'm done, if you really wanted to make your own opinion, based on other people's - you would put all of them into questioning to validate them - not just take them as they are.
