Hide public IP from local server

#21

IIRC there's a port open that it's going to be using by default, so you could close that and then they can't see any info regarding it.

Your IP is used in anything you connect to, so hosting a local server is no different.

ipv4 is an internet protocol, it doesn't mean it's a local address.A simple solution in my opinion would just be to go offline when developing. No distractions plus they can't see your IP.

IPv4 can mean local address if the router is using IPv4 - which in this case it is. If his internal IP is what he mentioned that should work perfectly for what he wants to do

Well I currently feel pretty dumb, but out of my laziness I was already using the solution since months without knowing it. Here's the trick:

The Server must be running on your local machine to make it comfortable to use (other solution provided below):

  1. Have your server (windows) installed on your machine.
  2. Use this restart script: https://pastebin.com/LKnZ8iAS (<- Very good for developing)
  3. Go to Steam, Click the Games menu, choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Now select the .bat Script I just gave you.
  4. Go to Steam, Games click the newly generated shortcut, and go to settings
  5. Call it whatever you want, like "Private" or "Garrys Mod - Developing"
  6. Save
  7. Start your Garrys Mod first, wait a bit and now click the new Shortcut on Steam
  8. Your test/dev server should now start up and auto-restart once you type exit in.
  9. For everyone else on Steam it says "Currently Playing "Garrys Mod - Developing" but they can't view your IP etc.
  10. Done

Other solution:

  1. Save this as a .bat file anywhere on your system: https://pastebin.com/r1XE9KDt
  2. Go to Steam, Click the Games menu, choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Now select the .bat Script I just gave you.
  3. Go to Steam, Games click the newly generated shortcut, and go to settings
  4. Call it whatever you want, like "Private" or "Garrys Mod - Developing"
  5. Save
  6. Start your Garrys Mod and your Server
  7. Run the shortcut via Steam. A new Batch should now open just printing out something, you can close it by typing anything you want
  8. For everyone else on Steam it says "Currently Playing "[Whatever you called it"" but they can't view your IP etc.

How do you add .bat file to steam game library? Seems it only allows for .exe files to be added.

Try assigning a .exe and changing the path manually after that
