Hi,

What is a good way to start making your own website from scratch? I wanted to make my own website to show off of some school work, but I don't want to use templates or make it look like shit. Can I get some tips on how to start? Guides would be helpful.

Thanks guys!

If you don't want to use templates, then you'd better start learning HTML and CSS (jscript as well if you're looking for functionality). Look at other websites or templates to get inspiration and then start with the HTML/CSS for the layout itself.

Firebug is a good plugin if you want to edit CSS / HTML on-the-fly before you make your changes directly to the file (saves you having to upload/refresh all the time). And there's other similar plugins out there that make it easy. If you're looking for functionality as far as being able to sign-up, small forum, etc. You'll need to look at PHP.

Then for writing the code, you'll prob want to get something like Sublime, Atom, or Notepad++ and then an FTP application (sublime, atom and notepad++ have plugins to do this) or you can use Filezilla, GlobalScape CuteFTP, whichever.

Just make a simple site that is responsive, and use something like lightbox to show off your photos or a similar jquery overlay. Most libraries come with pretty detailed documentation -- so it should be easy to follow along if you're new to this. And Google is your friend if you do not know something.

Here's just some stuff off-hand you can look at. You can choose whatever to use and there are a crap-ton of other alternatives to these:

Editors / Plugins Sublime 3 Sublime Packages / Addons

Notepad++ Notepad++ Packages / Addons

Google Atom Atom Packages / Addons

Browser Plugins Firebug

PHP PHP Documentation

FTP Clients WinSCP Filezilla GlobalScape CuteFTP

Libraries / Framework jQuery Materialize Framework Bootstrap Bootstrap Lightbox Lightbox 2 Featherlight LightGallery

Templates for Inspiration Theme Forest Template Monster

imo materialize has a better grid and responsive system than bootstrap and that's all you should really be using front-end frameworks for.

I usually look at peoples' stuff then think of my own and mix whatever I got in the end result together and it works out.

Also WinSCP is better and more secure than filezilla.

I mainly use bootstrap and jquery. I LOVE materialize but use that ONLY if you want your site to have the Material style.

Using front end frameworks for a grid system? Lol. Including an extra 140kb when you can use skeleton.css. Why would you use material/bootstrap/semantic when all you want is a grid system. Seems silly to make the client download all of that if you won't use it. How is WinSCP more secure lol? Filezilla is as secure as you want/need.

It's just how I work, I use materialize cause it has everything I need just incase, I usually use tooltips and collapses but more or less the grid 90% more than anything else.

I don't get it, why not just sftp:// with filezilla? I always use FileZilla + pageant for sftp. Obviously you need to password your priv key.

Any password you're using to connect to a server with filezilla is downloadable from gmod servers, I've witnessed first hand. Can't give the method out though, rather not have a serverwatch running around with it.
