Why is my Steam API-Key required for this addon?

Just curious, you're not supposed to share your API-Key right? So, is it safe in this sense for the addon or is it really required? https://www.gmodstore.com/scripts/view/3991/split-load-loading-screen-admin-panel

API key is used to get a player's info such as their avatar/name/etc. The author has no access to get your API key unless you're dumb and give it to him.

It's required to show your avatar, username and what not.

You can use the xml format of steam (not the one involving the actual api) but it's much slower and deprecated so using the api is generally better

Do I have to put it on there? As it says it's required, but I don't plan on adding on the loading screen who's mod and admin. So is there a purpose not to add it then?

yes, if any type of avatar or username is showing then yes

It's better to just add it in case a feature depends on it, you don't break crap. It's not a big deal unless you plan on giving your FTP details out to a random 10 year old developer and they take the file. No one else can see it. And if you think it has been compromised, then just gen a new one, easy.

The worst thing someone can do with your Steam API Key is spam the Steam API and therefore get the key blocked, but you can just generate a new key if this happened (which it won't.) It cannot access or modify any sensitive information.

@Billy,

But I'm reading that the Steam API-Key can lead to sensitive info or something to that persons' account.

If you want your api key safe though... https://www.gmodstore.com/scripts/view/5000
