Best Server Host for US - East? VPS or Game Server?

Last read Never
#1

I first decided on a server based on prices and accessible reviews. I went for nitrous networks but some people were saying it's not the best. Should I change? I just purchased it a few days ago.

I've been researching thoroughly and I've heard mixed things about GMC hosting but it appears to be good. People were also saying that a VPS is worth considering. Is it better overall (cost and quality wise) to get a VPS instead and what would you recommend?

Some other notable mentions for game servers I've heard of are NFO and HostHavoc but I'm unsure of what to think of these other than that NFO seems kind of expensive relatively and people like it.

I'm not interested in any server that redirects to a Canadian location or is based anywhere other than the US (so please spare me any adverts about crident and such).

So what's the verdict, should I discontinue with Nitrous to find something new and what would you recommend if I did?

I really appreciate all input on this because I'm completely lost as far as choosing a proper service goes.

I personally have an NFO 3-core VDS/VPS. It only costs me $21/month and you can host more than one server on it. The machine is fast and the support is great! I would recommend them.

Thanks for replying and that sounds great!

How many slots do you use and what CPU % is consumed when you're maxed out typically?

I plan on running a TTT server right now so it will be sort of lightweight as far as mods go, but I do plan on getting a high slot (60+) DarkRP server in the near future.

If you were to have only 2 servers, you should be totally fine. I usually use 32 slots but I can't give you an accurate CPU % as there are never any players on :(((.

DarkRP while idling takes about 15% CPU on average.

Gotcha. Well I'm considering buying it, but I don't have much to compare it to. I'm still unclear as to whether I should even leave NN or stay. Some people seemed to really dislike Nitrous, but no one mentioned the reasoning why.

nitrous networks is terrible serenityservers is terrible too same with ELHost gmc is re-routed from canada to new york so it's basically canada tbf

NFO has really good shit but terrible ddos protection (but it's not like ur going to be ddosed 24/7) HostHavoc is a balance of NFO pretty much, cheap but effective.

If you would like to add me on Steam, we can talk more. Since a VDS is unmanages, you will have to install your own game panel. I know of a few amazing ones that are free. I can also help you set the machine up if you do decide to get it. (Don't worry, I won't charge. I like to help friendly people!)

Edited Shoot sorry internet went out help

The only thing with HostHavoc is that they didn't have VPS/VPD (Do they? I didn't see them). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the reply. Can you explain why NN is bad?

Would HostHavoc be better overall than the VPS for NFO that was already mentioned?

Here are the specs for HH : Processor:Xeon E3-1270v5 Memory:64GB Disk:x2 1TB HDD

and for NFO (3core vps) $21 / month: Access to three HT CPU cores (Intel Sandy Bridge or better) 3072 MB of RAM 300 GB of RAID-protected storage 18000 GB of bandwidth transfer

I'm probably going to have 2 servers to start off and the second one is going to have high slots. Do you think HH would be able to handle 60+ players without lag? Since there's not much ddos protection NFO might not be a good choice for the second server and in that case it might be better to just have two HH servers is what I'm thinking.

Thanks again.

NFO does have a filter system and they do a great job at notifying you of a potential attack.

Also, the specs for HH you gave are their servers, and you don't get access to all of them. That means you share those resources.

Here is NFO's article on DDos attacks: https://forums.nfoservers.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=4931

Your probably bought one but, OVH has one of the best vps's in the world, $18 usd for an amazing vps. Would recommend in the East Coast.

I actually heard a lot of negative things about OVH. Have you had any issues with them?

OVH's VPS aren't very powerful. You don't get much disk space, RAM, or the amount of cores you can get everywhere else for that same price. Also, OVH is in Canada or Europe and he said he didn't want any Canadian servers.

I joined and I lagged for a bit, and I never lag. I mean, OVH doesn't have enough beef for a good gmod server. You only get 2 cores and a 40 GB SSD. You may get 8GB of RAM but Gmod doesn't need that much RAM.

Thanks for all the help guys.

No one's going to mention ExtraVM? You can get virtual private servers from them with an i7 4790k! I used their 1GB RAM plan once and it was pretty good.

edit Oh they've upgraded to i7 6700k servers now :D

You are aware that a gmod server only run on 1 core?

According to their website they don't have servers in US, only in Canada and France (So they probably use OVH servers).
