Script Reviews - An Open Discussion

Last read Never

Since the site has been around we've been pretty harsh on reviews - we've always required...

  1. That if it's regarding a problem you've opened a support ticket already
  2. Anything below 5 stars requires an explanation on why you're docking points
  3. It cannot be a proven issue due to your negligence, aka no unfair reviews
  4. Script related reviews only, no personal attacks/reviews

... however there has obviously been people who have been in disagreement over this and how we've handled reviews in the past. So let's make this thread our opportunity to discuss it, and some changes that you guys, the community, would like to see. It will serve to hopefully improve what's already in place, and to clarify a few things that people haven't always been too certain about.

Docking works just as well.

Personally I think 4 star reviews can be justified without leaving a proper comment, anything below that should be justified with an explanation.

Why would people complain about this? Its not even damn harsh its just common sense...

Script related reviews only, no personal attacks/reviews

Reviews on customer service are perfectly valid in my opinion. Just don't be a fucking jerk.

It's always been an issue with those receiving and giving the reviews. That's why I want to have this discussion, and lay everything rule wise bare about them.

How about requiring ANY review to be justified? I hate seeing empty manually assigned 5-star reviews.

I agree, this provides a easy way to farm rep and also can be misleading in terms of actual script quality

Reviews at their core are ways for customers to voice their experiences with a script, to help inform other potential purchasers about whether they are buying the right thing. I, as well as many other people here, feel as if the content which reviews are allowed to contain must be clarified. I believe that a review is able to describe these things from the viewpoint of the customer's experience, off the top of my head:

  1. How well the script does what it says on the package (NOT what you expected it to do, read the description to make sure you know what you're buying before leaving a shit review because you don't know how to read)
  2. The quality of support if you happen to need it.
  3. The script's performance/optimization, but only if you have submitted a support ticket because its slowing down your server when you don't believe it should.

Here are some examples of bad reviews, in my opinion:

  1. Docking a star just because without reason, "not everything can be perfect", etc.
  2. Leaving a bad review before contacting support about any issue you may be having
  3. Bitching about the look of a mainly-UI based script in your review (you saw pictures before you fucking bought it, didnt you???)
  4. Leaving a bad review because the script does not have a feature which it did not advertise and which you were expecting (once again, learn to fucking read)
  5. Leaving a bad review because the script hasn't been updated in a while (now this is stupid, updates to scripts with planned/new features are not required from the content creator at any point, this has happened to me personally when a game which my scoreboard is based off of changes its design the smallest bit, and people are expecting me to update to that new version to match the game's new look. newsflash, we are only required to make sure the script is able to be run as advertised bug free on the latest version of Gmod.)
  6. Literally refusing to accept support and bitching about your problem after you deny all attempts to be helped
  7. "New version is shit, I miss the old version of this script" Well newsflash you fucking tard, you can download older versions.

As for Harry's comment regarding four-star reviews, there is a reason for a five-star rating system: If you rate a script five stars, you are having no issues with the script whatsoever that impact your ability to use it. If you had an issue, you contacted support and it was all sorted out for you in a timely matter. Obviously, if you rate less than five stars, there has to be a reason why you were not happy. You should never be allowed to remove a star "just because". Not stating your reasoning in bad reviews only makes the lives of content creators even more difficult as we have no clue what issue you are having or what we can improve. This also slanders the reputation of the script.

Feel free to argue against my points, or support them. I've been waiting to have this conversation for a long time.

Edited Also, enjoy this good laugh:

Most definitely, reviews are suppose to reflect on how good the script is, not just increasing the review rating cause you gave your friend it for giving you a 0 detailed 5 star review.

I know most of these have been said already but just in-case I'm gonna go over what I think:

  1. Reviews cannot be written if you're being a retard, aka "help i can't install" "the config broken???" etc...
  2. Reviews cannot be written if you haven't contacted support yet and waited at least a week for a reply
  3. Everyones' favorite: No review can be written if you're being an extra retard saying "I want a feature" seriously this is probably the most annoying review I've seen on this marketplace

We should also get a report button for reviews (creators of the script only), cause leaving messagings in discord or on the forums seems to not get the attention of mooberators unless you annoy the fuck outta them (being honest here) Reviews that don't have any input but are like 5 star reviews can be reported manually cause having a shit review over someone farming review score is more important tbh.

I totally agree with the whole justifying EVERY review thing. I also think people who are manually assigned shouldn't be able to leave a review honestly, it's kind of stupid imo.

This star system I personally find degrading towards the content creator.

Clear examples of when people leaving a low amount of stars for reviewing everything else but the product that was sold to them.

I mean look at this shit. enter image description here

I highly suggest we change the rating system to a simple, thumbs up or thumbs down with a comment. Evidently, leaving the possibility of the developer to go through the comments reading all the thumbs down, furthermore submitting a report on the review if it is stupid.

Consequently, depleting all aspects of 'unnecessary' reviews. enter image description here

Yet leaves a 4 star review? For something that wasn't even advertised being in the script. Maybe he can discover this.

Using the thumbs up or thumbs down system with the comment would deplete this as I very much doubt the individual would submit a thumbs down towards for something that wasn't even originally advertised in the script.

Furthermore if the individual gave you a thumbs down without submitting or having any support tickets it would be automatically removed.

Evidently redirecting them to the support section of the script, subsequently contacting the author hopefully resolving the issue giving them the chance to give you as the content creator a 👍 which would be equivalent to +1 rep.

As far as I'm aware, 4 starts still gives your a +1 rep and imo is considered good on a global standard. 5 stars should really be reserved for times like "omfg, this is the best script I have ever used" and 4 stars for more "ye, the scripts alright". Almost any 4 star review on my scripts, comment or not, I leave because I still see it as a positive review...

My opinion goes against almost everyone's in this thread so I'm ready for my bath of dumb ratings, but just chipping in my opinion.

If it's just alright, there has to be a reason why it is. If they don't state that reason it's only hurting us in the long run as we don't know what's wrong with our scripts, and what we can do to improve them.

But that's my point, something can be "alright" without any actual issues.

Okay, first, some jackass use the review system not to review the addon, but only to ask questions, and they feel like they're going to get satisfaction (when it's a feature request) faster than the average customer.

Then, it's not like any other AAA game.

We don't have a marketing team behind us making some fake trailer with features that doesn't exist, the client literally see what they're going to buy, so there is no much reasons to complain in the review exept :

  1. terrible tech support
  2. tech support guy won't fix bugs

And that's all, nothing else, the performance "argument", is not even a valid point since the code is being reviewed by content currators.

Let's be honest here, and don't fucking tell me you disagree because in the creative corner, 95% of the content creators will agree with me.

There is a huge majority or people who are not good with computers here, they have no idea what optimization means.

Then there has to be something the user would change about it either way if it's under four stars. And don't talk about new features, because they knew fully what they were getting when they bought the script.

also, why are we complaing on reviews ? because we spend too much time handeling people who don't give a fuck about us, they take the time to open a ticket but won't open the god damn readme file/read the description.

this is a 7/7 tech support, good luck finding another support that will

  1. let you talk directly to the dev
  2. actually get your problem fixed
  3. be faster than the average big company
  4. be a 7days/7days support

in like 1.8 years i was unable to do tech support for only 3 days. this is why ~~we~~ i'm bitching about shit reviews
