Securemod Awareness
By[CC] Dannyat 2nd of March 2018 23:04:15
It's like if you bought a TV and used it for a year and then the manufacturer decided that they didn't wanna support it anymore and came and robbed my television.
It's happening and it's called Planned obsolescence.
Thinking it over for several days, I came up with these solutions:
Solution A. The Content Creator uploads both script with DRM and without it to Gmodstore. The DRMed version is public and allowed by customers to be downloaded, while non-DRM version only can be downloaded by moderation stuff (or head admins), same goes for every update, once subscription is over (therefore script doesn't work anymore) there's timer for n days after expiration of which non-DRM version becomes available to customers.
Solution B. DRMed scripts are highlighted by big red banner that boldly states that there are:
- no guarantees on this script working if dev stops paying for DRM subscription
- no way to change some parts of the code by yourself
And buyer agrees with these terms and willing to proceed acknowledged of such risks.
I suppose both of these solutions aren't controversal, say, every DRM script is highlighted by red banner with warnings, however if Content Creator agrees with 1st solution then the banner is green saying that this DRM-protected script also supports Customer Protection.

First of all congratz with post 1000.
Second of all, I agree with you. Although I also do like Attache's idea, as some developers might abandon their scripts faster then others. Maybe a new update in gmodstore v3 where you can whitelist a non DRM version to a customer. And if the developer can no longer pay for the DRM service all customers could request a GMS staff after x days. If a developer wants to use a DRM service he is also responsible for it.
Just wanted to share my opinion on this, convince me I am wrong if you disagree :)
This is why i avoid securegmod crap. Thanks for telling us.

That's pretty funny coming from you
This thread is dipshit.
His point is "If X stop paying, your addon will stop working"
Well, if your ISP stop paying for the electricity, your internet will stop working ?
When there is an issue with securegmod it gets fixed in the tickets quickly, which force us to give fast tech support for everyone and not only the small percentage of guys having problems with securegmod (because of specific network setup or other shit).
Don't be like OP, he's a salty frustrated kiddo because velkon fuckedup, velkon should be punished, only him fucked-up here, not anyone who's using securegmod.
You don't trust me ? Check the reviews ;)
Look at his last message, it literally shows he's butt-hurt. Acting like retards on tumblr that can't get pussy/dick so they decide to hate all females/males.
Noone is trying to attack Securegmod, as far as I am aware it functions for me perfectly fine combined with mCasino. My concern merely was paying for something that I can not even remotely edit without going through the process of submitting a ticket. In which case then they even have to consider themselves that if they update it with my suggestion that that update goes out to everyone so your request likely may be rejected. Also, for the fact that say you purchase an add-on on a script that a guy releases with a DRM (which there is nothing forcing him to advertise publicly that he has one attached) and you enjoy it greatly. But it fails to meet his goals in sales therefore making it dumb financially for him to proceed with a DRM version and just abandon the script because he doesn't want it to be leaked. Leaving me, the buyer. Completely boned for supporting something I thought was developed and presented well. But as for the ISP example you could sue your ISP for cutting your internet permanently because of faults of their own because you're in a contract with them.. =\ Obviously outages are an exception. But again I'm not trying to have an un-friendly tone and I don't think OP is either...

This is entirely up to the dev to decide which functions to "hide".
I only hide the core function that most people will not need.
If someone asks for a way to mod it, i'll have more hooks in it so he doesn't need to the code. Some "devs" like venatuss however decide to put all the serverside code on securegmod, which is a bad idea in my opinion.(i heard he changed that, could be wrong tho)
On ezjobs, only the menu to create jobs is protected, which means that even if some day, i die before releasing a "un-drm" patch the addon will still work, you will not be able to edit the jobs in the menu, that's true, but the jobs will be working at each server restart, there is even a "export to Lua" function that export from json to Lua the ezjobs jobs.
Using a DRM on my addons is NOT some kind of one-way trade where you got scammed.
In 764 days of being a gmodstore content creator i took literally 3 days off.
There is nothing as "slow support" with my tickets.
you have no idea how much time i (or we, content creators, thinking about Freeman and Billy, and i'm sure we're not the only ones spending a lot of time in tickets) spend on tickets, and i can guarantee you that without DRM that allows me to get this amount of sales, i would not spend this time doing tickets.

This ticket took me a lot of time
113 messages in one ticket

Again, I'm not saying I have anything against any content creators successfully and fairly using DRM. I believe DRM is a good thing in essence. I just feel some content creators don't advertise it well enough that a DRM is involved. Obviously you've put a lot of thought into implementing it in a way that makes your buyer more comfortable and I think that's great and a good example of how DRM should be implemented. And on your point that they can release documentation regarding their functions I agree, but again like you said that is up to the dev. And some of said devs do not do that is my point. Noone here is saying to remove DRM from the website. That would be ridiculous and unfair to the creators. All I am saying is that I feel that it could be expanded on and some rules could be implemented that would make it better for everyone and not just for the seller. =\ Think what I am saying is ridiculous all you want but no one here is trying to get rid of DRM. I'm just elaborating my concerns with it. If you disagree with me then so be it.
The main and only real reason I hate DRM is becuaseit makes it hard to modify the script. For example I had a job recently with someone who wanted me to customize there addon and add some features, most of them were impossible without cracking the DRM.
Yes, I am agree yes Me is agreement I is agreed
Also I feel as if DRM is necessary in the world of gmodstore, and I feel like specifying whether or not scripts have DRM is a great idea.

thats the most retarded comparison ive heard in my entire life first of all, your comparing to some kid making gmod scripts to a multi billion dollar company. And second of all, you pay monthly for internet, you're not paying once and get it for life.
why don't you come up with a decent counter argument to what op said instead of callin him salty and butt hurt. it makes you look like a fuckin idiot lol
looks like bizzy needs another break
he clearly doesn't belong to this community, even after being banned 2 (or 3?) times in a row, he keep acting like that
Funny how he was only able to stop being an ass for like 3 days only after being unbanned and now he's back at it

what? you're the one calling the op names instead of making an actual argument and i pointed that out lol
I'll quote P. C. Hodgell on this: "That which can be destroyed by the truth, should be". Is it not true that a script could be revoked from customer because the DRM doesn't provide a solution for such cases? Also, is it not true that GMS' - a marketplace that exist to make an experience of trading scripts safer? It's always a risk when you work with freelancers, but thanks to GMS services I can buy scripts and feel somewhat safe about it's quality and that I'll recieve at least anything after payment. This thread was started because that feeling of safeness began to disappear: just like riddick said, you buy the script, build server around it's functionality, then it's revoked and you find yourself in ruins. Even free workshop addons doesn't do this to you.
I'm speaking of bad examples because that's what about this thread - a conflict of interests which, as of now, has no solutions: if the dev is responsible then you're safe, otherwise you're unprotected. Speaking of which, Lapin, doesn't
you will not be able to edit the jobs in the menu
mean that there's a possibility, however small, that one day buyers will be ripped of the script they bought? I tried to find a solution which could be accepted by both parties: why should developer's rights become of greater value than customer's? And vice versa. As we started to speak in comparsions, I'll quote 4th Article of Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen [Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen] which should be familiar to you:
"La liberté consiste à pouvoir faire tout ce qui ne nuit pas à autrui : ainsi, l’exercice des droits naturels de chaque homme n’a de bornes que celles qui assurent aux autres membres de la société la jouissance de es mêmes droits. Ces bornes ne peuvent être déterminées que par la loi
[Liberty consists of doing anything which does not harm others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of each man has only those borders which assure other members of the society the fruition of these same rights. These borders can be determined only by the law.]
Which is why in the solutions I suggest not only devs, or DRM's support, or customers, but the whole GMS adressed: is it not the truth that while Developers are protected by GMS' policy, the customers are not? And my point in this is that they should be as well: protection should once again become universal on GMS for every party involved.
I do not demand DRM removal, but to highlight the truth. Before starting this thread my belief was that buying the script on GMS means that I recieve both the code and it's functionality, however I acknowledge views of some devs expressed here previously by providing different solution: to highlight what is customer recieves after payment, the scripts should be categorized by different criterias:
- Scripts that are sold fully with a license for customers to edit the core files, move between servers, adjust to their needs, etc
- Lend functionality, in which case what is bought isn't the code, but a solution to provide certain functions.
Chill out
one possible solution if the script maker doesn't renew his subscription to securegmod is for securegmod to ALWAYS succeed in authentication rather than fail. the addon will keep working after the dev is fallen from the face of the earth.
can this thread be closed ?
The problem hasn't been resolved yet, Lapin, that's what this thread about. Since Meepen agreeded on collaboration:
the resolve could be achieved by changing current GMS policies. Which requires the involvement of GMS head stuff.
